8/6/98. In addition, approval is condition on SAMHSA preparing a
brief paper (based on guidance from ONDCP) that provides additional
details, specifity of the evaluation plans, and a decision schedule
that addresses the issues outlined at the end of ONDCP's 8/3/98
memorandum to OMB. SAMHSA has agreed that this paper will be
presented to ONDCP prior to implementation of the evaluation
study.

This project will conduct a rigorous
evaluation of the costs and impacts of accreditation in a limited
number of methadone/LAAM treatment projects by collecting data
approximately 6 months pre- and 6 months post-accrediation. A
control group of methadone/LAAM treatment projects not seeking
accreditation in the same time frame will be included. Separate
approval is being sought for the accreditation standards, which
will be tested as an alternative to current FDA regulations of
these programs.
