The requirements
in the transaction final code set rule (HCFA- 0149-F) are approved
through 05/2005 with the understanding that these requirements will
be revised if and when the proposed rules CMS-0003-P and CMS-0005-P
are finalized. CMS must submit for OMB review a revision of this
package incorporating these proposed rules. In addition, the next
submission and subsequent revisions of this package must include
the latest version of the implementation guidelines supporting
these regulations. Finally, no later than 8/2002, CMS must submit
to OMB a correction worksheet and explanation amending its burden
and cost estimates to reflect the revised regulatory impact
analysis in HCFA-0149-F.

Section 1173a of Subtitle F of Title
II of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of
1996 (P.L. 104-191) requires that the Secretary of the Department
of Health and Human Services adopt standards for financial and
administrative transactions and data elements for those
transactions to enable health information to be exchanged
electronically. These standard will apply to health plans, health
care clearinghouses, and health care providers that transmit any
health information in electronic form.
