The CDC is conducting a performance evaluation program and testing practice surveys to assess and evaluate the relationships between laboratory practices and performance in sites performing the new HIV rapid tests. The advent of the new HIV rapid tests onto the U.S. market is likely to change the spectrum of HIV testing in the U.S. Since the most popular test, the OraQuick HIV Rapid Test (OraSure Technologies, Inc.) is waived under CLIA, the tests will be done in nontraditional testing sites and often by persons not trained in testing quality assurance.
