. . . . . for the assistance you gave to the Census Bureau field representative who recently
contacted you. The information given by you and members of approximately 54,000 other
households nationwide will be used by criminal justice planners who need reliable data on
the amount of crime in this country, as well as information on the circumstances of the
victimizations, to improve their effectiveness in combating crime problems. Much of this
information is not uniformly available from police reports. In addition, according to the
responses given to the Census Bureau by your household and others like it, over 60
percent of the victimizations reported to the National Crime Victimization Survey field
representatives are never reported to the police. This underscores the importance of the
courtesy and cooperation you have given us, and we want you to know that we are
sincerely appreciative.
