(INTERVIEWER READ TO R:)

The U.S. Department of Labor is asking Americans to participate in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979, Round 23, a survey about careers, health and families, and how they change over the course of people's lives.

Today we are conducting a screening for our next round of the study and would like to ask you a few questions to determine whether you or others in the household are eligible for the study and help us prepare for the start of interviews in the coming months.

This study is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is voluntary, so you may decline to answer specific questions or end the interview at any point. This survey is conducted to understand the labor market experiences of your generation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, it's employees and agents, will, to the full extent permitted by law, use the information you provide for statistical purposes only, will hold your responses in confidence, and will not disclose them in identifiable form without your informed consent. All personnel associated with this study have signed a legal document in which they pledge to protect the confidentiality of the information that survey participants provide.

The survey covers such topics as employment, schooling, job training, marriage, health status, fertility, income and assets. The information will help policymakers and researchers understand these important aspects of people's lives.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has approved the questionnaire and has assigned 1220-0109 as the study’s control number. This control number expires on [expiration_date~X]. Without OMB approval and this number, we would not be able to conduct this study.

Parts of this interview may be recorded for quality control purposes. This will not compromise the strict confidentiality of your responses.
