DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Scope of survey
This survey covers all manufacturers of machine-made
glass bottles, jars, vials, and tumblers for commercial
packing or home canning of any product, whether for
sale or for use by the producing company.

Food (item code 1150) — Non-juice containers
Examples include:

2. Figures to be reported
Companies with more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this survey are
requested to compile one report covering all locations.
a. Shipments
Column 1 — Report the shipments of glass containers in
thousands of gross and be sure to include:
Exports
Quantities shipped to consignees
Shipments to military offshore locations, post
exchanges, and ships' stores
Shipments to Alaska and Hawaii
Shipments to Puerto Rico
but exclude:
Shipments of purchased glass containers (i.e. resales)
b. Production
Column 2 — Report the production of glass containers in
thousands of gross.
c. Stocks, end of month, of glass containers
Column 3 — Report the stocks of glass containers in
thousands of gross. Include all containers on hand at
your plant(s) at the end of the month. Exclude imports
and stocks held by consignees. The sum of stocks on
hand at the end of the previous month plus production
during the current month minus shipments during the
current month should be equal to stocks on hand at the

flavoring extracts,
fruits and vegetables,
infant formula,
liquid salad dressing,
mayonnaise and salad dressings,
meat sauces,
mustard,
pickles and relishes,
preserves, jams, and jellies,

Beverage, (item code 1230) — Containers designed for
bottling soft drinks, water, fruit, vegetable juices and
blends, teas (plain and fruit flavored), and other nonalcoholic beverages.
Beer (item code 1250) — Containers designed for
bottling alcoholic beverages for multiple-trip and
single-trip use, including beer, ale, and porter.
Liquor (item code 1265) — Containers designed for
bottling alcoholic beverages excluding wines and malt
beverages, including such products as brandies,
cordials, gins, rum, and distilled spirits.
Ready to Drink Alcoholic Coolers and Cocktails (item
code 1280) — Containers designed for bottling alcoholic
single-service premixed cocktails and liquor coolers,
including malt based and wine based coolers.

Cosmetic and Toiletry — Containers for products
intended primarily to improve personal appearance or
to impart a pleasing odor:

Wine (item code 1295) — Containers designed for
bottling wines, whether sparkling or still, and
champagnes and vermouths, excluding wine coolers.
Other (item code 1350) — Containers for chemical,
cosmetic, health, household, industrial, medicinal, and
toiletry products.
Health and Medicinal — Containers for products which
are primarily intended to improve or maintain the health
of human beings or animals:
caplets
capsules
chemicals
citrate of magnesia
essential oils
extracts for medicinal purposes
liniments
nursing bottles
oral antiseptic
pharmaceuticals
prescription bottles
prescription ware
proprietary medicines
serums and parenterals

products not used in connection with human or animal
