MQ325F — PAINT (COATINGS), VARNISH, AND LACQUER
DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Scope of Survey

Exterior solvent-type

This survey covers firms manufacturing paint (coatings),
varnish, or lacquer in the United States.

Solvent thinned paints and tinting bases, including
barn and roof paints.

2. Figures to be reported

Solvent thinned enamels and tinting bases including
exterior-interior floor enamels.

Companies with more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this survey may
report each plant separately or file a combined report for
the company. If you have questions concerning your
report, please call or write to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Solvent thinned undercoaters and primers

a. Quantity and value of shipments

Other exterior solvent thinned coatings, including
bituminous paints

The figures on quantity and value of shipments should
include the physical shipments of all products sold,
transferred to other establishments within your company,
or shipped on consignment, whether for domestic or
export sale. The value represents the net sales price,
f.o.b. plant, to the customer or branch to which the
products are shipped, net of discounts, allowances,
freight charges, and returns. Shipments to your own
branches should be assigned the same value as
comparable sales to unaffiliated customers, i.e., the value
includes an appropriate allocation of company overhead
and profit. Products bought and resold without further
manufacture should not be included in shipments.
Include products made by you for others, but exclude
products made for you by others.

Solvent thinned clear finishes and sealers
Solvent thinned stains, including shingle and shake

Exterior water-type
Water thinned paints and tinting bases including barn
and roof paints
Water thinned exterior-interior deck and floor enamels
Water thinned undercoaters and primers
Water thinned stains and sealers
Other exterior water thinned coatings
Interior solvent-type

Include products transferred to other establishments of
your company (such as other manufacturing plants,
separate sales branches, or retail stores). Their "value"
should be the nearest approximation of the commercial
selling value, f.o.b. plant, and not the cost of production.

Flat solvent thinned wall paint and tinting bases,
including mill white paints
Gloss and quick drying enamels and other gloss
solvent thinned paints and enamels

b. Units of measure
Semigloss, eggshell, satin solvent thinned paints and
tinting bases

Report all quantities of shipments in 1,000 gallons and all
values in thousands of dollars.

Solvent thinned undercoaters and primers
Convert exterior dry lime and cement bound waterthinned paints, including casein and calcimines, on a
basis of 5 pounds per gallon.

Solvent thinned clear finishes and sealers
Solvent thinned stains

Convert plastic texture, paste and dry, on a basis of 10
pounds per gallon.
