The statement supports the extension
of clearance of electronic collection of information (OMB
0920-0650, expiration date, November 30, 2007) by the Prevention
Research Centers (PRC) Program of the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services.
Currently there are 33 funded PRCs housed in schools of public
health or medicine. PRCs conduct health promotion and disease
prevention research on a broad range of topics using a
multi-disciplinary and community-based approach. Partners
collaborate with the PRC to assess community health priorities,
identify research priorities, set a research agenda, conduct
research projects and related activities such as training and
technical assistance, and disseminate research to public health
practitioners, researchers, and the general public. The PRC
Information System (IS) is a web-based application developed to
collect information related to work plans and progress reports and
to track progress toward and achievement of the PRC performance
indicators. Data are collected on a bi-annual basis from all 33
PRCs and the IS provides required information in a systematic,
standardized, and timely manner. Data are used by CDC on an ongoing
basis to 1) monitor compliance with cooperative agreement
requirements, 2) identify needs for training and technical
assistance in areas such as training, evaluation, or
community-based participatory research, 3) evaluate progress made
in achieving center-specific goals and activities, 4) obtain
information needed to respond to Congressional and other inquiries,
5) summarize PRC activities across all 33 PRCs, which provides a
national description of the Program, and 6) identify PRCs with
similar activities and link them with each other and with CDC CIOs
to facilitate collaboration. Data are also used by the PRCs to
provide summaries of their own activities and impact on their
partners, communities, and local decision-makers and to share
information with other PRCs for collaboration on projects and for
learning from the experience of other PRCs doing similar
research.

This request is for an
extension without change in overall burden. Thirty-three respondent
organizations submit data on a semi-annual basis. Two people at
each organization are involved in this process. The current ICR
counts responses by respondent organization, instead of by the
