Reduction in
burden due to the decrease in number of respondents should be
reported as an adjustment, not as a program change. The summary of
ICR burden has been adjusted accordingly.

The Maritime Administration is
required to review requests for medals and awards from merchant
mariners for the periods of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Operations
Desert Storm, Desert Sheild, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi
Freedom.
PL:
Pub.L. 100 - 324 2 Name of Law: The Merchant Marine Decorations
and Medals Act
This information collection has
decreased as last reported in 2003. A number of World War II
merchant marine veterans are now deceased. However, there are many
family members who contact the Maritime Administration while doing
genealogy research on their relatives. With various websites
available, the public has been able to retrieve information
directly without contacting MARAD.
On behalf of this Federal agency, I certify that
the collection of information encompassed by this request complies
with 5 CFR 1320.9 and the related provisions of 5 CFR
1320.8(b)(3).
The following is a summary of the topics, regarding
the proposed collection of information, that the certification
covers:
(i) Why the information is being collected;
(ii) Use of information;
(iii) Burden estimate;
(iv) Nature of response (voluntary, required for a
benefit, or mandatory);
(v) Nature and extent of confidentiality; and
(vi) Need to display currently valid OMB control
number;
If you are unable to certify compliance with any of
these provisions, identify the item by leaving the box unchecked
and explain the reason in the Supporting Statement.
