HANDOUT FOR MINERS AND MINE MANAGERS
(Recruiting Announcement for mine managers and miners )
WANTED
VOLUNTEERS FOR NIOSH STUDY
AGES 18 AND OVER
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is studying the risk of Lower Back Disorders (LBD) and miners. Low back pain is the leading cause of disability and lost work days in the mining industry. The purpose of the current research study is to identify risk factors for low back injury in the mining workplace. This information can then be used to assess jobs in terms of their low back injury risk and provide a basis for evaluating injury risk before and after job changes are made. Although participating in this study will have no immediate benefits for you personally, what we learn may help to protect the heath and safety of your fellow mine workers. We are recruiting volunteers to respond to a four page questionnaire. The study is being conducted by Dr. Sean Gallagher, NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, Mining Injury Prevention Branch, 626 Cochran Mills Rd., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15236.
What is required?
The study will be explained to you and you will be asked to fill out a short questionnaire, including questions about your work history and certain postures while you work. The questionnaire will take about 15 minutes to complete.
Reimbursement
There is no reimbursement- however miners and mine managers will benefit from the results of this study because NIOSH will publish summary results and suggestions for using intervention and correct lifting techniques to lower the rates of injury to the miner and therefore, lower the number of lost work days and costs’ of workers compensation to the mine.
Possible risks
During the study, you will be asked to answer a short questionnaire. There are no risks to filling out the questionnaire. Your participation is voluntary and you may opt to not participate.
Who is eligible?
You must be at least 18 years of age, in generally good health, and a United States citizen. Miners working at this mine are eligible to fill out the LBD questionnaire.
What if I am interested?
For more information call Dr. Sean Gallagher at 412-386-6445 or e-mail [email protected] Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
