Recruiter: If you have a few minutes, I’d like to tell you about a study for women that I am in. You might be able to take part in this study too. Can I tell you more about it?

(If woman says NO)

Recruiter: Thanks for your time. [Stop here.]

(If woman says YES)

Recruiter: Great! Well first off, I need to see if you might qualify for the study. I will read some questions to you, but don’t tell me any of your answers right now.

  • Are you [Black/African-American] [Latina/Hispanic]?

  • Are you between 18 and 59 years old?

  • Do you understand either English or Spanish well?

  • Have you had sex with a man in the past 12 months? This means vaginal or anal sex, but not just oral sex.

  • Are you willing to get tested for HIV?

Are all of your answers yes?

(If woman is says NO)

Recruiter: It sounds like you would not be able to take part in this study. Thanks for your time. [Stop here]

(If woman says YES)

Recruiter: Now, I’d like to tell you a little more about the study, what’s involved, and how you take part. The Women’s Study is a survey that looks things that may put women at risk for getting HIV. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus hurts your immune system, the part of your body that protects you from infections. It takes about two hours to go through the entire thing. You would spend about half of this time doing a survey on a computer. They show you how to use the computer if you have never used one. The rest of time is spent learning about the HIV test and taking the test. With the test that is done in this study, you will get your test results the same day. When you are finished, you get $50. Your informational will be kept private. Do you want to me to tell you how to get into the study?

(If woman says NO)

Recruiter: Thanks for your time. [Stop here]

(If woman says YES)

Recruiter: Great. This is a study coupon. You need it to get into the study. It has a telephone number you can call to set up an appointment or to get more information about the study [point to number on the back of the card]. There is a number on this coupon that will tell the staff that I recruited you for the study. They have given me 3 coupons to use and I can get $15 for each person that I get to join the study. The study staff does not tell me if you joined the study. They only tell me if I earned money from my referrals. If you join the study, they will do the same thing for you. So, it’s really important to me that you do not lose this coupon. Bring it with you to your appointment.

Okay, let me give you the coupon [give woman one coupon]. You can set up an appointment when it is convenient for you. You’ll be helping the study learn about women’s health issues and you’ll learn what you can to be safer and stay healthy.

Thanks!
