Hi, my name is ________ and I’m a team member of the Women’s Study. I understand that you are interested in learning how you can refer women that you know to this study. Is this correct?

(If respondent says NO). Thank you for your time. [Discontinue training]

(If respondent says YES). Great! After I show what you need to do to refer women to the study, I will give you 3 coupons. You will give these coupons to 3 women you know. You will ask each one to call the telephone number listed on the front of the coupon. We will then make an appointment with each one and ask them to bring in their coupon. If a woman gets into the study, we will give you $15. If all 3 women get in the study, you can get up to $45.

It is important that you also remind each woman to bring her coupon with her to her appointment. The only way we will know you referred a woman is if she turns in her coupon. If she does not have a coupon, we cannot give you the $15 for referring her.

Each coupon has a number on it. The number tells us who referred a woman. Your name is never used. No other women taking part in the study gets coupons with your numbers on it. In other words, the coupons with these numbers are only assigned to you. We cannot give you any more coupons if you lose or use all of these. Three is the limit and they are only good for 30 days.

Because not all women can be in the study, we want you to try to give your coupons only to women who have the best chance of getting in. I will give you a card that you can read to each woman. How each one answers can help you figure out if you should give her one of your coupons.

We will give you a script to take home with you to remind you of what you need to say about the study. We will go over the script in a little while.

For now, let’s go over the questions on the card. [Read card]

• Are you [Black/African-American] [Latina/Hispanic]?

• Are you between 18 and 59 years old?

• Do you understand either English or Spanish well?

• Have you had sex with a man in the past 12 months? This means vaginal or anal sex, but not just oral sex.

• Are you willing to get tested for HIV?

If a woman answers NO to even one question, it is best not to give her a coupon.

If she answers YES to all 5 questions, you should explain to her that she will still be asked a few more questions by us to find out if she can be in the study. If she is interested in making an appointment, give her a coupon.

We will need you to call us at the end of the 30 days to find out if any of the women you referred got into the study. Remember, that we can only give you the money for women who get into the study and have a coupon with them. We will not tell you which women are the ones who get in the study. Also, we will not tell you why some of them did not get into the study.
