Instructions
Collect samples Sunday through Wednesday in designated week and ship within 24 hours of collection.
Samples are from FRESH fecal pats made by cows. DO NOT sample replacement heifers.
Number of samples to collect is based on cow herd size:
Fewer than XX cows, collect up to 30 samples (i.e., if 23 cows, collect 23 samples)
XX cows to XX cows, collect 35 samples
XX cows to XX cows, collect 40 samples
1. Freeze the ice packs at least 24 hours before collection.
2. Use a new tongue depressor for each sample.
3. Take samples from throughout the area where cows or cow/calf pairs spend most of the day.
4. For each sample, collect a golf-ball size sample from a FRESH fecal pat. Place each sample in a
separate whirlpak bag, express air, twist down twice, and clean off.
5. Write the Farm ID and Kit Number on a bag.
6. Keep samples cool and, if necessary, replace ice packs so samples are shipped with frozen ice
packs. DO NOT freeze samples. Place the YELLOW copy of the submission form in the shipping box.
Send the original to your Coordinator.
