Title: Telephone Survey for Taxpayers Who Obtained Refund Anticipation Loans on Their 2006 Federal income Tax Return Filed in Calendar Year 2007

Description: The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), as part of its Fiscal Year 2008 Audit Plan, will interview a valid sample of individual taxpayers who used a tax professional and received a Refund Anticipation Loan to obtain the refund for your 2006 Federal income tax return filed in Calendar Year 2007. The interview will be conducted using a set of questions designed to elicit the reasons or rationale why the taxpayer obtained a Refund Anticipation Loan. Information obtained through the survey will be used to determine the cost and burden Refund Anticipation Loans place on taxpayers. This data will help learn how the Refund Anticipation Loans affect tax administration, what changes are possible and could be taken to better monitor e-file providers, and what actions could be taken to mitigate burden through taxpayer education and/or changes to the administration of the tax system.

Respondents: Individual taxpayers
