HERE’S A CHANCE TO BE IN A RESEARCH STUDY
The National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and <STATE HEALTH AGENCY PARTNER> are doing a study. We want to know if people are affected by algae that naturally grow in bodies of water where people work, swim, and play. The purpose of our study today is to find out if the toxins made by these algae get into people’s bodies. Similar studies have been done in Florida and in Australia.
We hope you want to be in our study. To be a part of the study you should be in good health and plan to do activities today that involve being splashed with water. That means things like swimming, jet skiing, or sailing a small boat for at least 1 hour.
We will ask you some questions before you go out on the water and again at the end of your day here today. We will also ask you to give us a small (2 teaspoons) blood sample at the end of your day here. The blood sample will be used for some tests that will tell us if there are tiny amounts of the toxin in your blood. We will also call you at home in about 10 days to ask you a few more questions about how you feel.
There is no cost to be in this study. Because this is a research study and we cannot be certain what the results of your blood test mean, we will not give you the results. We will give you $25 for any costs you might have from being in our study.
If you want to learn more about this research study, please call our toll-free number 1-888 -810-7311 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week). Please leave a message with your name, phone number with area code, and best times to call you back. Thank you for your interest!
