Researchers from RTI International are planning to conduct a focus group study with male-to-female transgender persons on [dates] at [address] in [city] for the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

One of CDC’s key missions is to monitor the health of people in the United States. One of the main ways they do that is through information that people provide on surveys. Before they collect the survey data, they want to make sure that the questions are clear and make sense to people. If you may be interested in being a part of this study, please read further for information about how you may participate.

The purpose of the focus group is to evaluate a set of gender identity questions which will be used to identify whether or not a person gets asked survey questions on behaviors that put people at risk for contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. The focus group will also help design questions about silicone use and networking – strategies for finding eligible study participants. A group leader will ask you to share your thoughts and ideas on these topics with other people in the group.

The focus group will last no longer than 90 minutes. The focus group will be tape-recorded, and all participants will receive $50.

If you choose to participate, you are not required to discuss any question that you do not want to, and you do not have to reveal your name to other group members.

If you would like to participate or if you would like more information about the study, please contact [name] at RTI International at [phone number].

If you have questions about your privacy or your rights as study participants, you may contact the NCHS Research Ethics Review Board, toll-free, at 1-800-223-8118. Please leave a brief message with your name and phone number. Say that you are calling about protocol 2002-03-XX. Your call will be returned as soon as possible.
