WANTED
VOLUNTEERS FOR NIOSH STUDY
AGES 18 AND OVER
The Pathology and Physiology Research Branch (PPRB) at NIOSH Morgantown is studying the size and amount of droplets that people produce when they cough. We need volunteers to be test respondents in a study. The study is being conducted in L-2302.
What is required?
First, the study will be explained to you and you will be asked to fill out a short health questionnaire, including questions about any history of respiratory problems. Next, you will be asked to sit with your head and shoulders in a clear box and cough three times into a measurement system, waiting 10 minutes between coughs. The test session will take about an hour to complete. If you are willing, you may be asked to return for testing in one month and two months.
Reimbursement
NIOSH employees will not be compensated beyond their normal salary for the time they spend in the study.
Possible risks
During the study, you will be asked several times to take a deep breath and cough hard. There is a slight possibility that this may cause you to become dizzy or faint. Other than this, you should not be at any risk or experience any discomfort during this study. This type of testing is similar to commonly-used medical procedures and has been done before at NIOSH.
Who is eligible?
You must be at least 18 years of age and in generally good health. Smokers and non-smokers are welcome. You should not participate if you have a medical condition or illness that would make it difficult or uncomfortable for you to perform the test procedure described in “What is required?” You should not participate if you have a respiratory infection such as a cold, influenza (the flu), or tuberculosis.
