Nearly 5.8 million
(3.6%) grandparents
live with their children
and grandchildren.

•

It is estimated that
nearly half of children
under five years are
cared for by a family
member. Care by a
grandparent, aunts, and
other relatives accounts
for 30% of the total
child care nationally.

•

•

Family members have
routinely been identified
by health researchers
and clinicians as being
highly influential for
individual behavior
change.
Previous research has
demonstrated
that
family members are
valuable audiences for
programs because of
their level of motivation
to individuals eligible for
the program.
