Introduction to the Audio-CASI/debriefing interview

Instructions to be read: Thank you for coming in today. You have read the Informed Consent form and you agree to take part in this research study. Is that correct? The work we do here is to make sure that questions used in national surveys are understandable. Today we are testing a set of questions for the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. As we have said earlier, some people may consider the questions that we are testing today to be personal.

 First, I want to assure you that we are only interested in finding out if these questions are easy to understand and if everyone understands them the same way. We are NOT specifically interested in your answers to the questions or in your private life.

 Also, I want to re-assure you that what you say in this session will be kept strictly confidential. Confidential means that your name will never be linked to the answers you give. When we write a report, we will not put your name in it. Only relevant staff people will have access to your answers or the audiotapes.

 Also, if for any reason you do not want to answer a question, that is fine. Simply let me know and we’ll move on to the next question.

What we are doing today is divided into two parts. In the first part, I will ask you to answer the questions we are testing. Answering the questions involves using this computer— which I will help you get started. You will put the head phones over your ears, and the computer will ask you the questions. You will use the keyboard to give your answer. This will take between approximately 10-15 minutes.

In the second part— after you answer the questions on the computer— I will ask you about your experience answering the questions— how you understood certain questions, interpreted certain words, and whether any of them were difficult to answer, and how you think we could change the questions so more people will understand them.

Ok, now I’d like to ask you some questions about your experience answering the questions on the computer, how you understood certain questions, interpreted certain words, and whether any of the questions were difficult to answer, and how you think we could change the questions so more people will understand them. We are NOT interested in your answers to the questions.

Note to Reviewers:

The interviewer will ask emergent probes to better understand the respondent’s experience using the headphone/computer set-up as well as the question-response process. Examples of the sorts of probes that may be asked at the interviewer’s discretion include:
