HOUSEHOLD ENUMERATION

CATI: CREATE TWO “PRIMARY” ROSTERS OF ELIGIBLE HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS ACCORDING TO INFORMATION FROM NUM_ADULT, NUM_RACE, NUM_FEM. THE PRIMARY ROSTERS WILL PROVIDE THE LABELS USED FOR REFERRING TO HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS DURING THE INTERVIEW.

FEMALES

  1. IF ONLY ONE FEMALE IN HOUSEHOLD, USE: FEMALE

IF MORE THAN ONE FEMALE IN HOUSEHOLD, USE: OLDEST FEMALE

  1. SECOND OLDEST FEMALE

  2. THIRD OLDEST FEMALE

  3. FOURTH OLDEST FEMALE

  4. FIFTH OLDEST FEMALE

.

.

MALES

  1. IF ONLY ONE MALE IN HOUSEHOLD, USE: MALE

IF MORE THAN ONE MALE IN HOUSEHOLD, USE: OLDEST MALE

  1. SECOND OLDEST MALE

  2. THIRD OLDEST MALE

  3. FOURTH OLDEST MALE

  4. FIFTH OLDEST MALE

.

.

THEN…

CATI: CREATE TWO “SECONDARY” ROSTERS CONSISTING OF 1) FEMALES AGED 40-64 AND 2) MALES AND OTHER FEMALES (I.E., THOSE NOT AGED 40-64), USING INFORMATION FROM NUM_RACE, NUM_FEM, NUM_OVER64 AND NUM_4064. THESE ROSTERS WILL BE USED SOLELY FOR SAMPLING PURPOSES. WHEN CREATING THESE SECONDARY ROSTERS, BE SURE TO MAINTAIN THE LABELS FROM THE PRIMARY ROSTERS.

FOR EXAMPLE, IF WE HAVE A FOUR-PERSON HOUSEHOLD WITH 1 MALE, 1 FEMALE OVER 64, 2 FEMALES AGED 40-64, AND 1 FEMALE UNDER AGE 40, THE SECONDARY ROSTERS WOULD READ AS FOLLOWS:

FEMALES 40-64

  1. SECOND OLDEST FEMALE

  2. THIRD OLDEST FEMALE

MALES AND OTHER FEMALES [FOR CONSISTENCY: ALWAYS LIST MALES FIRST]

  1. OLDEST MALE

  2. OLDEST FEMALE

  3. FOURTH OLDEST FEMALE

FOR SAMPLING PURPOSES, FEMALES 40-64 WILL BE ONE GROUP AND MALES/OTHER FEMALES WILL BE THE SECOND GROUP. FOLLOW SAMPLING PROCEDURES BELOW FOR SELECTING RESPONDENT(S).

SAMPLE CLASSIFICATION

Classify screened eligible households into 1 of 3 categories:

  1. ALL ADULTS IN RACE/ETHNIC GROUP ARE NOT FEMALES AGE 40-64 YEARS. LET NUMNOTF4064 EQUAL THE NUMBER OF OTHER ADULTS IN THE HOUSEHOLD.

  1. ALL ADULTS IN RACE/ETHNIC GROUP ARE FEMALES AGE 40-64 YEARS. LET NUMF4064 EQUAL THE NUMBER OF FEMALE ADULTS AGE 40-64 YEARS IN THE HOUSEHOLD.

  1. ONE OR MORE ADULTS IN THE RACE/ETHNIC GROUP ARE NOT FEMALES AGE 40-64 YEARS AND ONE OR MORE ADULTS IN RACE/ETHNIC GROUP ARE FEMALES AGE 40-64 YEARS. LET NUMNOTF4064 EQUAL THE NUMBER OF OTHER ADULTS IN THE HOUSEHOLD. LET NUMF4064 EQUAL THE NUMBER OF FEMALE ADULTS AGE 40-64 YEARS IN THE HOUSEHOLD.

Primary approach:

  1. The first step is to determine if we want to keep or terminate the category 1 household (category 2 and 3 households skip this step):

Create a pre-load variable called CAT1SELCTL which will be assigned to each sample telephone number in a stratum in a community. CAT1SELCTL starts at 1 and increases to 100, decreases to 1, and restarts at 1, and so on. For a category 1 household the value of CAT1SELCTL will be compared against CAT1SELLIM, a constant that will be handled internally within CATI. If CAT1SELCTL is less than or equal to CAT1SELLIM then we will keep the household. If it is greater we will terminate the household. So for example if we set CAT1SELLIM to 100, then we will not terminate any category 1 households.

  1. We would then proceed to randomly select one adult from the households that are not terminated..

To do this we need to create two pre-load variables which we will call SELKEY1 and SELKEY2. SELKEY1 will start with 1 and increase to 60. It will then restart at 1 and increase to 60, and so on. Each sample telephone number in a stratum within a community will receive a SELKEY1 value. SELKEY2 would be created in the same fashion. SELKEY2 would be used to select other adults and SELKEY1 would be used to select females age 40-64 years.

For category 1:

If NUMNOTF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMNOTF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMNOTF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY2 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY2 - K * INT(SELKEY2 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMNOTF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the roster.

(If NUMNOTF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

For category 2:

If NUMF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY1 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY1 - K * INT(SELKEY1 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the roster.

(If NUMF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

For category 3, the other adult category:

If NUMNOTF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMNOTF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMNOTF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY2 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY2 - K * INT(SELKEY2 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMNOTF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the other adults in the roster.

(If NUMNOTF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

For category 3, female age 40-64 category:

If NUMF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY1 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY1 - K * INT(SELKEY1 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the females age 40-64 in the roster.

(If NUMF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

Secondary approach: (Back-up)

Step A is the same as above.

  1. The second step is to determine if we are going to sample one adult who is a female age 40-64 or one adult who is not a female age 40-64 years from a category 3 household (category 1 and 2 households skip this step):

Create a pre-load variable called CAT3SELCTL which will be assigned to each sample telephone number in a stratum in a community. CAT3SELCTL starts at 1 and increases to 100, decreases to 1, and restarts at 1, and so on. For a category 3 household the value of CAT3SELCTL will be compared against CAT3SELLIM, a constant that will be handled internally within CATI (i.e., this is the same as NBSELLIM in CO-TABS). If CAT3SELCTL is less than or equal to CAT3SELLIM then we will select a female age 40-64 from the household. If it is greater we will select an adult who is not a female age 40-64 from the household. So for example if we set CAT3SELLIM to 60 we will select a female age 40-64 with a 60% probability and we will select an adult who is not a female age 40-64 with a 40% probability.

  1. We would then proceed to randomly select one adult from the households that are not terminated.

To do this we need to create a pre-load variable which we will call SELKEY3. SELKEY3 will start with 1 and increase to 60. It will then restart at 1 and increase to 60, and so on. Each sample telephone number in a stratum within a community will receive a SELKEY3 value.

For category 1:

If NUMNOTF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMNOTF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMNOTF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY3 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY3 - K * INT(SELKEY3 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x.

Calculate the remainder of SELKEY3 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY3 - K * INT(SELKEY3 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the roster.

(If NUMF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

For category 3, if we select the other adult category:

If NUMNOTF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMNOTF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMNOTF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY3 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY3 - K * INT(SELKEY3 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMNOTF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the other adults in the roster.

(If NUMNOTF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)

For category 3, if we select the female age 40-64 category:

If NUMF4064 = 1, select that adult.

If NUMF4064 > 1, let K = min{NUMF4064, 6}. Calculate the remainder of SELKEY3 modulo K, namely R = SELKEY3 - K * INT(SELKEY3 / K), where INT(x) denotes the integer part of x. Let P = NUMF4064 - R. Select the Pth person from the females age 40-64 in the roster.

(If NUMF4064 > 6, only the six oldest adult in the household will have a chance of being selected, but the impact of this limitation is small.)
