Dear 1:
It is time for the annual count of the Nation=s prisoners at yearend. Enclosed is the National Prisoners Statistics (NPS-1B) data collection form for yearend 2006. The form includes pre-printed counts from the NPS-1B form that you submitted for December 31, 2005. Please update these counts, provide new counts for yearend 2006, and submit all data by January 31, 2007.
There is also a Web reporting option, accessible at http://harvester.census.gov/nps/asp/. Your password appears on the form to the left of the address label. The Governments Division of the U.S. Census Bureau is our collection agent. If you need assistance, please call Theresa Reitz at (800) 253-2078 or send an e-mail to [email protected].
The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968, as amended (42 USC 3732), authorizes the collection of these data. Although your participation is voluntary, we need your help to make these counts accurate and timely.
I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. Allen Beck is now the Principal Deputy Director at BJS, and I have the honor and challenge of replacing him as Chief of the Corrections Statistics Program. I look forward to working with you. Thank you for your continued support of BJS= statistical programs. If we can assist you, feel free to contact me at (202) 514-1062 or Paige Harrison at (202) 514-0809.
Sincerely,
William J. Sabol, Ph.D.
Chief, Corrections Statistics Program
