OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR

I am writing to ask you for your help with a short survey the U.S. Census Bureau is conducting
for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), called the National Youth
Volunteering and Civic Engagement Survey.
The CNCS has asked us to collect information on volunteering activities that you may have
participated in as part of your school activities or as a part of a community or religious
organization that you belong to. Within the next 3 months, our interviewers will ask you general
questions about your experiences, as well a few other questions about your community
involvement. Whether you’ve volunteered a lot or a little, or even if you haven’t volunteered at
all, your answers are very important since they will represent the answers for others just like
you. By participating, you will help our leaders design programs that will make community
involvement more attractive and meaningful to you.
One of our interviewers will call your household to conduct the interview. If you would like to
schedule a specific time for your interview, please do so by calling 1-877-749-4943. If you do
not want to participate, please inform the interviewer of your decision when he or she calls.
Your participation is voluntary, and we hope that you decide to take part in this very important
study on teen volunteering and civic engagement in our Nation. We invite you to visit the
following Web site to find out more about the CNCS: .
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,

Steve H. Murdock

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Will This Survey Take?
For each person, the time will differ depending on the answers you provide; we expect the
interview to take between 10 and 20 minutes.
What Will My Answers Be Used For?
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that provides
opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country.
The information collected through this survey will be used by CNCS and others to better
understand how and why young people participate in their community through service. The
results will be published in a series of reports. To see how results from previous surveys have
been used, see the Youth Helping American Series at .
How was I selected?
During the past two years, a member of your household participated in the Current Population
Survey. From the results of that survey, we have identified households with children who are now
between the ages of 12 and 18. We then selected one person from each household to participate
in this survey. This selection approach reduces costs and saves taxpayer dollars.
What Confidential Protection Do I have?
The Census Bureau is conducting this survey under the authority of Title 13, United States Code,
Section 8. Section 9 of this law requires that all information can only be used for statistical
purposes. Every Census Bureau employee takes an oath and is subject to a prison sentence, a
fine of up to $250,000, or both, if he or she discloses any personal information.
What if I Have Comments About This Survey?
If you have any comments about the time estimate or any other aspect of this survey, please
send them to Paperwork Project 0607-0913, U.S. Census Bureau, 4600 Silver Hill Road,
AMSD & 3K138, Washington, DC 20233. You may e-mail comments to [email protected];
use “Paperwork Project 0607-0913” as the subject. The approval number from the Office of
Management and Budget(OMB) is 0607-0913 and will expire on December 31, 2009. Without this
approval from the OMB, the Census Bureau could not conduct this survey.
