APPENDIX 7: PHASE 2 PROJECT INFORMATION FOR COMMUNITIES

NORC, a national organization for research at the University of Chicago, is undertaking an important study designed to provide information on issues affecting women’s lives and health. A Study of Women’s Well Being is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some women over the age of 18 in your area will be selected as part of a sample for this study. Starting in [MONTH, YEAR], NORC interviewers will contact selected households in your community. Interviewers will visit these residents to explain the study and determine whether anyone in the household is eligible to participate. They will conduct one-on-one interviews with eligible women who agree to participate. We wanted to inform you of this research project and alert you that our interviewers will be present in your community. On other similar studies, we have found that some people in selected households have called their local police districts, government offices, or other community authorities to obtain information about our presence and confirm that we are legitimate.

Be assured that participation in this study is completely voluntary and that our interviewers will adhere to the strictest professional standards. Our interviewers will be wearing photo identification badges stating that they are NORC representatives. The interviewers are trained professionals who have signed legally binding pledges of confidentiality.

NORC is one of the oldest and most prestigious social survey research organizations in the nation. We have been conducting nationwide surveys for 60 years, during which we have earned a reputation for research that is scientifically sound and in the public interest.
