MA325F — PAINTS (COATINGS) AND ALLIED PRODUCTS
DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Scope of survey
This survey covers manufacturers of paints (coatings) and
allied products.
Clear finishes and spar varnishes — Transparent protective
and/or decorative films, including urethane coatings, natural
varnishes and shellac varnishes.
Eggshell finish — Low sheen (semi-matte) surface which
exhibits surface reflectance (gloss) similar to that of an
eggshell, lying between flat and semigloss.
2. Figures to be reported
Companies with more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this survey may
complete a separate report form for each location or
complete one report for the entire company. If you have
questions concerning your report, please call or write to the
U.S. Census Bureau for additional forms.
a. Quantity and value of shipments
The figures on quantity and value of shipments should
include the physical shipments of all products sold,
transferred to other establishments within your company, or
shipped on consignment, whether for domestic or export
sale. The value represents the net sales price, f.o.b. plant,
to the customer or branch to which the products are
shipped, net of discounts, allowances, freight charges, and
returns. Shipments to your own branches should be
assigned the same value as comparable sales to
unaffiliated customers, i.e., the value includes an
appropriate allocation of company overhead and profit.
Products bought and resold without further manufacture
should not be included in shipments.
Enamels — Topcoats with the ability to form a smooth
surface; usually associated with a high gloss, but also used
with lesser gloss, i.e.; flat enamels.
Exterior coatings (items 5112–5155) — Architectural coatings
that are expected to possess reasonable durability when
exposed to natural weathering.
Lacquers — Coating composition based on synthetic
thermoplastic materials dissolved in organic solvent, which
dries primarily by solvent evaporation. Typical lacquers
include those based on nitrocellulose and other cellulose
derivatives, vinyl resins, acrylic resins, etc.
Solvent — Non-aqueous liquid, usually volatile, used to
dissolve or disperse the coating constituents, which
evaporates during drying and does not become part of the
dried coating.
b. Units of measure
Stains — Transparent or semitransparent solutions or
suspensions of coloring matter in a vehicle, designed to color
a surface by penetration without hiding it, or to color a
material into which it is incorporated.
Report all quantities of liquid shipments in 1,000 gallons
and all values in thousands of dollars. Report quantity of
powder coatings shipped in thousands of pounds.
Undercoat — A coat of paint applied on new wood, over a
primer, or over a previous coat of paint, to improve the seal
and to serve as base for the topcoat.
3. Definitions of selected paint and coatings terms
OEM Coatings (item codes 5221–5269) — Coatings
formulated specifically for Original Equipment Manufacturers
(OEM) to meet conditions of application and product
requirements, and applied to such products during the
manufacturing process. Report OEM and refinish marine
coatings on item code 5315. Report all other refinish paints
on item code 5313. See "Industry Code Correlation" for a list
of NAICS industry codes for the products that correspond to
these coatings.
(Source: Paint/Coatings Dictionary, Federation of
Societies for Coatings Technology, 1978. Some definitions
have been modified to meet the specific needs of this
report.)
Architectural coatings (items 5112–5193) — Coatings for onsite application to interior or exterior surfaces of residential,
commercial, institutional, or industrial buildings. These are
protective and decorative finishes applied at ambient
temperatures, for ordinary use and exposure. Report
industrial new construction and maintenance paints on item
codes 5301 or 5305.
Electrical insulating coatings (item code 5253) — Coatings
(varnishes), often used in combination with materials such as
mica, fabric, paper, etc., to provide insulation for electrical
equipment. These coatings are formulated to have high
resistance to electrical conduction.

DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS — Continued
Powder coatings (item codes 5254–5268) — 100
percent solids coatings applied as dry powders and
subsequently formed into a film through the
application of heat or energy.
Also includes maintenance coatings used to maintain
nonresidential structures; building and nonbuilding
requirements in such areas as public utilities,
railroads, roads and highways; and other industrial
plant coatings; the primary purpose of which is
protection. Report residential maintenance coatings
on item codes 5112–5193, architectural coatings.
Primer — First complete coat of a painting system
applied to a surface. Designed to provide adequate
adhesion to new surfaces and to meet special
requirements such as absorption and/or corrosion
control.
Marine paints, including ship and offshore — Paints and
coatings specifically formulated to withstand water
immersion and exposure to marine atmosphere.
Exclude spar varnish. Includes marine refinish paints.
SPECIAL PURPOSE COATINGS, INCLUDING
COATING FOR TRANSPORTATION AFTER MARKET
(item codes 5301–5331)
Special purpose coatings may also be stock type or
shelf goods, but differ from general architectural
coatings by the fact that they are formulated for
special applications and/or special environmental
conditions such as extreme temperatures, chemicals,
fumes, etc.
Industrial new construction and maintenance paints —
High performance coatings formulated to withstand
extremes of use, such as heavy abrasion, water
immersion, chemicals, corrosion, extreme
temperatures, and electrical or solvent exposure.
Refinish paints (item code 5313) — Coatings formulated
specifically to meet particular product and application
requirements, and sold to the refinishing trade or
through retail outlets for aftermarket application.
Report marine refinish coatings on item code 5315.
Traffic marking paints (item code 5311) —Paints
specially formulated to withstand wear of vehicular
traffic and to be highly visible at night; used to mark
center lines on roadways, traffic lanes, crosswalks,
etc. Includes paints manufactured with reflective
beads.
