MA327E — CONSUMER, SCIENTIFIC, TECHNICAL AND
INDUSTRIAL GLASSWARE
DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Scope of survey
This survey covers all manufacturers and fabricators of
the consumer, scientific, technical, and industrial
glassware. Establishments (primary and secondary)
manufacturing glassware from glass produced in the
same establishment and those manufacturing glassware
from glass purchased or transferred from other
establishments of your company are included.

SECTION I — Consumer Glassware (Machine Made and
Handmade), Item codes 1141-1200
Column (1) Total Quantity of Shipments — Report the
total quantity of shipments of consumer glassware in
the unit of measure specified. The total quantity of
shipments should be the sum of the machine made and
handmade columns.

2. Figures to be reported
a. Quantity
Figures may be based on records of sales, shipments or
billings, whichever most closely approximates the
physical movement of products out of this plant.
Include —

Column (2) Total Value of Shipments — Report the total
value of shipments in thousands of current U.S. dollars.
The total value of shipments should be the sum of the
hand and machine made columns.

Products transferred to other establishments of your
company as well as products shipped to your
customers.

Column (3) Machine Made Quantity — Report the total
quantity of shipments for the machine made glass in
the unit of measure specified.

Products shipped on consignment, whether or not sold
at the end of the year.

Column (4) Machine Made Value — Report the total
value of shipments for machine made glass in
thousands of current U.S. dollars.

Subtract returned products previously shipped.
Do not include shipments of products purchased and
resold in the same condition.

Column (5) Handmade Quantity — Report the total
quantity of shipments for handmade glass in the unit
specified.

Report in 1,000 pieces or 1,000 dozens as requested for
specified items.

Column (6) Handmade Value — Report the total value of
handmade glass in thousands of current U.S. dollars.

b. Value

SECTION II — Lighting, Automotive, Scientific, Technical,
and Industrial Glassware (Machine Made and Handmade)
— Report the total value of shipments for machine
made and handmade glassware in thousands of
current U.S. dollars.

Report the NET selling value at the factory or plant of
the total quantity of each product designated. This value
should approximate as nearly as possible the actual
amounts received or receivable by you for shipments
made during the year. The reported figures should
represent values, f.o.b. plant, after discounts and
allowances and should not include freight charges and
excise taxes.
Include cost of containers in which products were
shipped. For products transferred to other
establishments of your company (such as other
manufacturing plants, separate sales departments, sales
branches, retail stores, etc.), value should be the

Code 1154, Other table, kitchen, art, and novelty glassware
— Includes other table, kitchen, art, and novelty
glassware not specified above.

Code 1141 — Tumblers (nonstemmed vessels) —
Continued.
The most common tumblers are: beer glass, beer stein,
cocktail, collins, coolers, delmonico, highball, iced tea,
juice, malted, milk, old fashion, pilsner, room tumbler,
side water, soda, split, water, and whiskey.
Code 1142, Stemware (used generally for drinking – also
may be used as dessert dishes) — Vessels with long and
short stem, footed ware. The most common stemware
items are: beer goblet, brandy, brandy snifter,
champagne, cocktail, cordial, dessert, sour, footed
pilsner, water goblet, and wine glasses.
Code 1143, Tableware — Items from which food and
beverages are served or consumed, but not prepared.
The most common items are: bread and butter plates,
cups and saucers, cereal bowls, dinner plates, handled
mugs, salad dishes, snack sets, soup bowls, butter
dishes and covers, cake plates, candy dishes, chip'n dip
sets, cream and sugar sets, vinegar cruets, hors
d'oeuvre plates, jam dishes, meat dishes, pitchers
(water, juice, syrup), punch bowls and cups, relish
dishes, salad bowls, salt and pepper, serving carafes,
and vegetable bowls.
Code 1148, Cookware, ovenware, and kitchenware
including microwave specialty pieces — Items of ceramic
glass and heat-resistant glass used to cook over direct
heat or in the oven, and items used in the preparation
and storage of foods.
The most common kitchenware items are: canister sets,
cookie jars, juicers, measuring cups, mixing bowls,
shakers, refrigerator bottles, and refrigerator storage
dishes.
The most common ovenware items are: baking dishes,
cake pans, casseroles, custard cups, loaf pans, oven
roasters, pie plates, and utility dishes.
The most common cookware items are: carafes, coffee
makers, double boilers, dutch ovens, platters,
saucepans, skillets, and teapots.
Code 1151, Ornamental, decorative, novelty glassware,
and smokers' accessories — Include such items as
floralware (flower blocks, vases, ivy balls, and planters),
ash trays, cigarette boxes, humidors, towel bars,
decorative jars (apothecary, bathroom, and candy and
spice), miscellaneous items (beverage coasters, caster
cups, candle holders, fish bowls, piggy banks,
Christmas tree ornaments), etc. (Specify kind)

Code 1159 — Partially fabricated products shipped to
another glassware establishment (in the same company
or a separate company) for further processing should be
reported on this line and not included on the individual
lines above. The processing establishment will report
the finished product on the appropriate product line.
This will avoid duplicate reporting of the same product
by separate establishments.
b. Lighting and Electronic Glassware
Code 1241, Automotive lighting glassware — Sealed
beam lenses, backup lenses, signal lenses, and interior
automotive lenses.
Code 1243, Searchlight and other lenses — Railroad,
marine, air and traffic lighting glassware.
Code 1245, Electric light bulb blanks —Incandescent,
photo flash, and mercury vapor and high temperature
lamps.
Code 1247, Tubing and cane for electric light bulbs and
fluorescent and neon lighting — Exhaust tubes and flares
for incandescent and fluorescent lamps.
Code 1251, Electronic tube blanks, radio, X-ray, radar, and
special tubes — Exclude television picture tube blanks
and parts. Include cathode ray, power tubes,
microwave, and storage tubes.
Code 1255, Television tube blanks and parts; and tubing,
cane, and other glass parts for electronic tubes and devices
— Cylinders, rod-support insulators, diode beads and
bodies, multiform parts, and moisture getter.
Codes 1257 and 1259, Bowls and enclosing globes, etc. —
Lantern globes, chimneys, enclosing globes, shades,
prismatic and diffusing globes, luminaire globes,
decorative lighting glass parts and shields, and plates
for fluorescent and incandescent lighting fixtures.
Interior and exterior.
Code 1265, Other lighting and electronic glassware —
Include such items as dials, insulator, custom-made
lighting and electronic glassware, etc. (Specify kind)
Code 1269— See code 1159.

Code 1479, Other glassware — Include such products as
glass blocks, nursery bottles, balls, radomes, nose
cones, vessels, vials, etc. (Specify kind)

c. Scientific, Technical, and Industrial Glassware
Code 1471, Tubing, rods, and canes, all types (except
electrical and electronic) — Items which are produced
for uses such as volumetric ware, advertising
purposes, heat-absorbing uses, and precision bore
applications.

Code 1489 — See code 1159.
4. Comparability

Code 1472, Scientific and laboratory glassware –
reusable — Beads, beakers, bottles, burrets, centrifuge
tubes, condensers, connecting tubes, crucibles,
cylinders, desiccators, fritted disc, flasks, funnels,
ground joints, jars, microscope slides, cover glasses,
Petri culture dishes, pipets, special laboratory
apparatus, stopcocks, test and culture tubes,
thermometer and hydrometer blanks, custom-made
laboratory apparatus.

Data reported in this survey should correspond to data
reported in the Economic Census - Manufacturing Sector
form. The sum of values for item codes shown in column
(a) should correspond to dollar values reported under
product codes indicated in column (b) below.

Code 1474, Scientific and laboratory glassware –
disposable — See code 1472.
Code 1475, Industrial and technical glassware — Battery
jars, caps and bodies, coffee urn liners, explosion
capsules, flow meter blanks, gauge glasses,
lubrication glasses, copy machine cylinders, sight
glasses, vacuum bottle parts, godet wheels, heat
exchangers, milking machine accessories, glass pipe
for chemical and food process and drain lines, rashing
rings, ground glass, glass knobs, insulators, etc.
