M311C—Corn (WET AND DRY MILL PRODUCERS OF ETHANOL)
(MONTHLY REPORT)
DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Scope of survey

medium energy feed product obtained from the
corn germ fraction after the corn oil has been
removed { approximately 20 percent protein} .

This survey covers all establishments generating
corn by-products in the w et and dry mill process
of ethanol product ion.

Corn and other grain grind in dry mill; including
beverage alcohol distillation { 1300} — Corns and
other grains processed by grinding kernels into
coarse flour and fermenting to convert starch to
sugar, including those used in the distillation of
beverage alcohol.

2. Figures to be reported
Companies w ith more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this
survey are requested to complete a separate
report form for each location. If you have not
received a separate report form for each of your
establishments, please call the contact show n on
the report form or w rite to the U.S. Census
Bureau for additional forms. A separate report
form is required for each w et or dry mill w hich
your company operates.

Distillers Wet Grain { 1301} — The feed product
obtained after the removal of ethanol by
distillation from the yeast fermentation of a grain
or a grain mixture by separating the resultant
coarse grain fract ion of the w hole stillage not
dried.

a. Materials and oils to be included on this report
Report all quantities of by-product product ion and
corn grind used during ethanol product ion,
w hether for your ow n account or on a toll basis.
All establishments reporting corn by-products
should report corn grind. Corn grind is a
necessary input in the product ion process of
corn by-products.

Distillers Dried Grain w ith Solubles { 1302} — The
feed product obtained after the removal of ethanol
by distillation from the yeast fermentation of a
grain or a grain mixture by condensing and drying
at least 3/4 of the solids by the methods
employed in the grain distilling industry.

Corn grind in w et mill { 1200} : Corn processed by
steeping w hole kernels in w ater to release starch.

Distillers Dried Grain { 1303} — The feed product
obtained after the removal of ethanol by
distillation from the yeast fermentation of a grain
or a grain mixture by separating the resultant
coarse grain fract ion of the w hole stillage and
drying it by methods employed in the grain
distilling industry.

Corn gluten meal { 1201} — High protein { gluten}
feed product separated in the corn w et milling
process and combined w ith minimal quantities of
starch and fibrous fraction { approximately 60
percent protein} .

Distillers Dried Solubles { 1304} — The feed
product obtained after the removal of ethanol by
distillation from the yeast fermentation of a grain
or a grain mixture by drying the thin stillage
fract ion.

Corn gluten feed { 1202} — Medium protein
medium energy feed product consisting of the
corn bran and condensed steep w ater solubles
remaining after the extract ion of starch, gluten,
and germ. It may include corn germ meal and
other co-products of w et milling { approximately
20 percent protein}

Condensed Distillers Solubles { 1305} — The feed
product obtained after the removal of ethanol by
distillation from the yeast fermentation of a grain
or a grain mixture by condensing the thin stillage
fraction to a semi-solid.

Wet Corn gluten feed { 1203} — Medium protein,
medium energy feed product made by screening
and pressing w et corn fiber to reduce w ater
content. It can include steep liquor, corn germ
meal, and fermentation residues { approximately
40-60 percent dry matter} .

Other Corn By-Products { 1400} — report any and
all corn ethanol by-product s produced at the
establishment not listed on this form, w hether in
the w et or dry mill process.

Corn germ meal { 1204} — Medium protein,

b. Consistency checks
If your company also refines or further processes
corn crude vegetable oils, a report form should
also be filed for each such location on Form
M311J, " Monthly Report of Oilseeds, beans, and
Nuts, Primary Processors." If you are not filing a
Form M311J for such locations, please notify us
and w e w ill send you the necessary report forms.
If you are an ETHANOL DRY OR WET MILL
PLANT reporting corn grind and/ or corn byproducts, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that you w ould
need to report corn crude vegetable oil
production on Form M311J. Ethanol crude oil
and stocks is NOT collect ed on this survey or the
M311J survey.
3. Definitions
The product detail for this survey, as show n in
the Reference List, is defined according to
standard nomenclature for this industry.
Wet Mill Ethanol Plant — Corn w et milling is the
process of separating the corn kernel into starch,
protein, germ, and fiber in an aqueous medium
prior to fermentation.
Dry Mill Ethanol Plant — In dry milling, the entire
corn kernel is first ground into flour and the
starch in the flour is converted to ethanol via
fermentation.
