DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
1 . Scope of survey
This surv ey cov ers all est ablishm ent s produc ing edible
and inedible anim al f at s (lard, t allow , grease, m eat
m eal, m eat and bone m eal, and dry rendered t ank age).
2 . Figures to be reported
Com panies w it h m ore t han one est ablishm ent
m anuf act uring t he produc t s cov ered by t his surv ey are
request ed t o c om plet e a separat e report f orm f or each
locat ion. If y ou hav e not rec eiv ed a separat e f orm f or
each of y our est ablishm ent s, please c all t he c ont act
show n on t he report f orm or w rit e t o t he U.S. Census
Bureau addit ional f orm s.
Include all m at erials processed on a t oll basis and
m at erials st ored f or t he ac c ount of ot hers, including
such gov ernm ent agencies as A gric ult ure M ark et ing
Serv ice, Com m odit y Credit Corporat ion, et c .
Stocks — Report st ock s as of t he last day of t he
report ing m ont h. Include all st ocks phy sically locat ed
at t his est ablishm ent w het her f or y our ow n account or
t he account of ot hers including gov ernm ent agencies
such as t he Com m odit y Credit Corporat ion, et c. Include
st ocks w hich are in t ransit t o t his est ablishm ent on t hat
dat e. Do not include quantities ow ned but stored
elsew here, e. g., public or private w arehouses not
located at the processing location. These stocks should
be reported for each location on Census Form M 3 1 1 H,
" Animal and V egetable Fats and Oils (W arehouse
Stocks)." If you are not filing a Form M 3 1 1 H for such
locations, please notify us and w e w ill send you the
necessary reporting forms.

3 . Definitions
Producers of inedible t allow should report direc t

f eed m ix ers in t he U. S. in it em c ode 7 5 2 3 and direct
shipm ent s of grease t o liv est oc k and poult ry f eed
m ix ers in t he U.S. in it em code 8 9 2 3 or 9 2 2 3 . Ex clude
shipm ent s t o f at reproc essors.
Producers of m eat and bone m eal, dry rendered
t ankage, f eat her m eal, and all ot her produc t s (it em
codes 9 3 0 0 , 9 4 0 0 , 9 5 0 0 , 9 6 0 0 , and 9 8 0 0 ) should
report product s ready f or use as f eed or f eed m ix ing,
including m eat m eal, m eat scraps, m eat and bone m eal,
m eat and bone scraps, liv er m eal, liv er and glandular
m eal, poult ry by product m eal, digest er t ankage, or any
m ix t ure of t hese produc t s.
The product det ail f or t his surv ey is def ined according
t o st andard nom enclat ure f or t his indust ry .
M eat m eal and m eat and bone m eal is t he f inely
ground, dry rendered residue f rom anim al t issues
ex clusiv e of hair, hoof , horn, hide t rim m ings, blood
m eal, m anure, and st om ach cont ent s, ex cept in such
t races as m ight occur unav oidably in good f act ory
prac t ice.
Feat her m eal (hy droly zed poult ry f eat hers) is t he
product result ing f rom t he t reat m ent under pressure of
clean, undecom posed f eat hers f rom slaught ered
poult ry .
A ll ot her product s includes blood m eal and poult ry
by -product m eal. Blood m eal is ground and/or sc reened
dry blood. Poult ry by -product m eal consist s of t he
ground dry rendered or w et rendered clean part s of t he
carc ass of slaught ered poult ry , such as heads, f eet ,
undev eloped eggs, and int est ines, ex clusiv e of f eat hers.
