DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Scope of Survey

Exterior solvent-type

This survey covers firms manufacturing paint (coatings),
varnish, or lacquer in the United States.

Solvent thinned paints and tinting bases, including
barn and roof paints.

2. Figures to be reported

Solvent thinned enamels and tinting bases including
exterior-interior floor enamels.

Companies with more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this survey may
report each plant separately or file a combined report for
the company. If you have questions concerning your
report, please call or write to the U.S. Census Bureau.

a. Quantity and value of shipments

Other exterior solvent thinned coatings, including
bituminous paints

The figures on quantity and value of shipments should
include the physical shipments of all products sold,
transferred to other establishments within your
company, or shipped on consignment, whether for
domestic or export sale. The value represents the net
sales price, f.o.b. plant, to the custom er or branch to
which the products are shipped, net of discounts,
allow ances, freight charges, and returns. Shipm ents to
your own branches should be assigned the same value
as comparable sales to unaffiliated customers, i.e., the
value includes an appropriate allocation of company
overhead and profit. Products bought and resold without
further manufacture should not be included in shipm ents.
Include products made by you for others, but exclude
products made for you by others.

Solvent thinned clear finishes and sealers
Solvent thinned stains, including shingle and shake

should be the nearest approximation of the commercial
selling value, f.o.b. plant, and not the cost of
production.
