MQ327D — CLAY CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS
PRODUCTION AND SHIPMENTS
DEFINITIONS AND SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
1. Scope of survey
Facing brick — A brick made especially for facing
purposes, often treated to produce surface texture, and
made of selected clays or otherwise treated to produce
desired color.
This survey covers manufacturers producing clay
construction products.
2. Figures to be reported
Facing tile — Tile designed for use in exterior or interior
walls, partitions or colum ns where the faces of the units
are to be left exposed.
Companies with more than one establishment
manufacturing the products covered by this survey are
requested to complete a separate report form for each
location. If you have not received a separate form for
each of your establishments, please call the contact
shown on the report form or write to the U.S. Census
Bureau for additional forms.
Ceramic glazed brick — Brick having a glaze of bright
satin or glass finish obtained by spraying the clay body
with a compound of metallic oxides, chemicals, and clays
and burning at a high temperature, fusing the glaze to the
body, making them inseparable.
a. Quantity and value of shipments
The figures on quantity and value of shipments should
include the physical shipments of all products sold,
transferred to other establishments within your company,
or shipped on consignment, whether for domestic or
export sale. The value represents the net sales price to
the customer or branch to which the products are
shipped, net of discounts, allowances, freight charges,
and returns. Shipments to your own branches should be
assigned the sam e value as com parable sales to
unaffiliated customers, i.e., the value includes an
appropriate allocation of com pany overhead and profit.
Products bought and resold without further manufacture
should not be included in shipments.
Production — Report quantities of all clay construction
products produced at this establishment. Include
products made elsewhere for this establishment on a
contract basis from materials supplied by this
establishment. Exclude products made for you by others
from their materials.
Structural clay tile — A hollow masonry building unit
composed of burned clay, shale, fire clay, or mixtures
thereof and having parallel air cells.
Quarry tile — Glazed or unglazed tile made by the
extrusion process from natural clay or shale usually
having six square inches (39 square centimeters) or more
of facial area.
Vitrified — That characteristic of a clay product resulting
when the temperature in the kiln is sufficient to fuse all
the grains and close all the pores of the clay, making the
mass impervious.
4. Comparability
If you also report in the Annual Survey of Manufactures
(Form MA-10000), the sum of values for item codes
shown in column (a) should correspond to the dollar
values reported under product class codes indicated in
column (b) below:

b. Units of measure
Report net production and quantity of shipments for brick
and facing tile and ceramic glazed brick in thousands of
standard brick equivalents. A brick equivalent is equal to
62.2 cubic inches. Report unglazed and salt glazed
facing tile in thousands of brick equivalents. Report
structural clay tile and vitrified clay sewer pipe and
fittings, in short tons. Clay floor and wall tile, ceramic
mosaic tile, and quarry tile should be reported in
thousands of square feet.
Value of shipments should be reported in thousands of
dollars.
3. Definitions
Building or common brick — Any brick made primarily
for building purposes and not especially treated for
texture or color.
