PRE-TRAINING INFECTION PREVENTION AND SAFETY ASSESSMENT

30 minutes

15 clinician staff (direct patient care givers, supervisors, therapists, etc) who will participate in the training and 5 other hospital staff (administrators, risk managers) who will not be receiving the training at the 34 hospitals

  • General work environment supportive of patient safety

  • Attitudes about patient safety and reducing healthcare-associated infections

  • Work practices which reduce or prevent healthcare-associated infections including practices for chest tube insertion, central venous catheter insertion, blood stream infection (BSI), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)

  • Training and education attended in past 12 months

POST-TRAINING INFECTION PREVENTION AND SAFETY ASSESSMENT

45 minutes

15 clinician staff (direct patient care givers, supervisors, therapists, etc) who have completed the training and 5 other hospital staff (administrators, risk managers) who will not be receiving the training at the 34 hospitals; and 1 infection control manager at the 102 control group hospitals


As above along with:

  • Documenting increased awareness and change in preventive practices

  • Identification of specific actions to be taken to trainee’s ability to implement

  • Empowerment to act as a “watchdog” for infection prevention and patient safety

INFECTION PREVENTION AND PATIENT SAFETY ACTIVITIES CATALOGUE

60 minutes

1 patient safety/quality assurance officer responsible for patient safety activities at the 34 hospitals and 1 infection control manager at the 102 control group hospitals


  • Training and education


  • Facility improvements that have contributed to improved patient safety

  • Ongoing and routine surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of improvements in HAI

  • Implementation of printed or electronic materials to support reductions in HAI

  • Any other activities addressing patient safety

  • Training and education on patient safety in past 12 months

TRAINING EVALUATION

10 minutes

25 clinician respondents being trained at the 34 hospitals

  • Usefulness of specific training taken

  • Relevance of training content to work

  • Ability to integrate new practices into work

  • Work-team environment facilitating change in practices

BASELINE INFECTION RATES SUMMARY

30 minutes

1 infection control manager at the 34 hospitals

Rates for:

  • VAP

  • BSI

  • Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI)

  • Surgical Site Infections (SSI)

FOLLOW-UP INFECTION RATES SUMMARY

40 minutes

1 infection control manager at both the 34 hospitals and the 102 control group hospitals

The rate information as above along with:

o Opinion on usefulness of current HAI information collection activities

o Identification of barriers, challenges, and successes in infection prevention
