Eligibility Requirements

for

Currently Enrolled College Students


  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen;

  • Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average;

  • Must be no more than an rising sophomore or junior [in order to be considered under the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)];

  • Demonstrate leadership and community service;

  • Apply for admission to, or currently attend, the 1890 University in which they submitted their USDA/1890 National Scholars Program application package;

  • Submit an official transcript to include grades through fall semester;

  • Submit a resume;

  • Submit two letters of recommendation from the following:

    1. Department Head, Dean of College, or one of the Vice Presidents of University

    2. College Professor who has taught you

  • Submit 500-800 word essay describing your interest in USDA and how you envision the scholarship will impact you and your future as a public servant. Also describe your experiences and perceptions about agriculture, food, and natural resource sciences; and

  • Submit the application package to the liaison office at the 1890 University of the applicant’s choice by the February 1st postmarked deadline.
