Survey of Medical School Researchers Regarding their Institution’s Research Misconduct Policy and Procedures

Dear _____________,

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity (ORI) has engaged the Research Triangle Institute (RTI), a not-for-profit research organization located in North Carolina, to conduct a Web-based survey. The survey is an assessment of researchers’ knowledge and perceptions of their institution’s research misconduct policy and procedures. The results of this assessment will be used by ORI to develop future educational programs to more effectively promote awareness of institutional research misconduct policies and procedures. You were selected into our probability sample of over 10,000 researchers in medical institutions to be surveyed because you were awarded a research project grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

This survey is voluntary and completely self-administered, so it can be completed at your own pace and convenience. Be assured that your responses are secure and will be kept confidential. The information collected will not be presented in a way that will identify you or your institution. It will be analyzed and reported aggregated with the responses of other researchers. The survey should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. We thank you for your participation in this extremely important activity.

Clicking on this link will transport you to a secure site at RTI where you can complete the survey:

If you have any questions about this survey, you may e-mail or call Drs. Arthur J. Bonito at RTI ([email protected] or 919-541-6377) or Sandra Titus at ORI ([email protected] or 240-453-8437). If you have any questions about your rights as a study participant you may call RTI’s Office of Research Protection toll-free at 1-866-214-2043. Thank you for your cooperation.

Dear _____________,

In a few days you will be invited to participate in a survey of prominent researchers involving a very important topic – the research misconduct policies and procedures in U.S. medical institutions. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity (ORI) has engaged the Research Triangle Institute (RTI), a not-for-profit research organization located in North Carolina, to conduct this survey. The survey is an assessment of researchers’ knowledge and perceptions of their institution’s research misconduct policy and procedures. The results of this assessment will be used by ORI to develop future educational programs to more effectively promote awareness of institutional research misconduct policies and procedures. You were selected into our probability sample of researchers in U.S. medical institutions to be surveyed along with several thousand others who were awarded a research project grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2005 or 2006.

We know you are busy and that is why we have made the survey quick and easy to complete. In the invitation to participate that you will receive there will be a link to a secure web site at RTI where your responses will be processed and tabulated along with those of other respondents. I want to thank you in advance for your participation in this extremely important activity.

Sincerely,
