The BLM collects the information to implement the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act, which requires the identification, protection, and maintenance of significant caves on lands managed by the Department of the Interior. The information provided for cave nominations is used to determine which caves will be listed as "significant" within the meaning of the Act. Requests for confidential informaition are used to decide whether to grant access to information regarding the location of any "significant" cave or any cave under consideration for designation as "significant."

Annual responses increased between Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 through FY 2008 (10/01/2005 through 09/30/2008), and our estimated time for each response increased, resulting in an adjustment from 605 burden hours to 1,090 burden hours.
