Cognitive Functioning Pilot Study Protocol:


Eligibility: Sample persons aged 60 years or older are eligible for the Cognitive Functioning Pilot Study.


Informed Consent: Informed consent will be obtained as a part of standard NHANES consenting procedures.


Exclusion Criteria: There are no exclusion criteria for this component, other than age eligibility.


Study Design: This is an interviewer administered component. Cognitive functioning will be assessed using three brief standardized tests: 1) Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) Word List Learning test involving a word list in which recall and memory are assessed; 2) Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale® – Third Edition (WAIS®–III) Digit symbol substitution test which evaluates attention and processing speed; and 3) Animal Fluency Test, designed to assess categorical verbal fluency, a component of executive function. The total time required to complete this component is estimated at 10 minutes.


Data Collection: Participants will take the assessment in a private Mobile Examination Center (MEC) interview room.


Report of Findings: Results will not be reported to the participant.
