Section: Household Information |
Again
this year, we've made some changes to the questionnaire based on your
feedback. For example, we focus our attention more closely on people
who matter to you in your household. We've also tried to reduce the
amount of time spent at the end of the interview taking care of
administrative details. There are some new topics throughout the
interview that may interest you but haven't been a part of our
interview in the past. We value your participation and would like to
improve your NLSY97 experience while still collecting the details of
your life that make the NLSY97 so valuable for research.
My
computer is equipped to record this interview for quality control,
testing, and training purposes. As always your confidentiality is
protected by Federal law and the policies of the Bureau of Labor
Statistics and NORC. May I continue with the recording?
INTERVIEWER:
IF RESPONDENT REFUSES TO BE RECORDED, PRESS THE MICROPHONE BUTTON IN
THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE QUESTION SCREEN. AND THEN SAY TO
THE RESPONDENT: I have now disabled the recording function. Let's
begin the interview.

Tell Us What You Think
Additional open ended questions on the respondent’s favorite person will be asked and recorded
Questions on ladder of life (from the Pew survey) will be included.
Previous questions on personality , best and worst event in the respondent’s life will be removed.
The revised section will be as follows:
YTEL-70 To finish up our interview today, I’ll ask you some different kinds of questions that may give you a chance to tell me more about your life and how you think about things.
[SHOW CARD YTEL-70] Here is a ladder representing the "ladder of life." Let's suppose the top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you; and the bottom, the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder do you feel you personally stand at the present time?
YTEL-71 [SHOW CARD TEL-70] On which step would you say you stood five years ago?
YTEL-72 [SHOW CARD TEL-70] Just your best guess, on which step do you think you will stand five years from now?
YTEL-73 Now I want you to think of somebody who is one of your favorite people, maybe a friend or relative. (IF ASKED: you don’t have to tell me who it is; he/she doesn’t have to be your absolute favorite, just one of your favorites.)
[IF R HAS NOT ALREADY INDICATED, ASK:] Is this person male or female?
1 MALE
2 FEMALE
YTEL-74 Describe (his/her) personality for me. (INTERVIEWER: RESPONSE WILL BE RECORDED. PLEASE DO NOT TYPE WHILE RESPONDENT IS SPEAKING.)
YTEL-75 If you needed help with something, what would (he/she) do? (INTERVIEWER: RESPONSE WILL BE RECORDED. PLEASE DO NOT TYPE WHILE RESPONDENT IS SPEAKING.)
YTEL-76 What does (he/she) do that makes (him/her) one of your favorites? (INTERVIEWER: RESPONSE WILL BE RECORDED. PLEASE DO NOT TYPE WHILE RESPONDENT IS SPEAKING.)
YTEL-61 Those are all of the questions that we have for you this year. As usual we appreciate the time and the attention that you give to the NLSY97.
Default: Interviewer Remarks
The NLSY97 design team works to maintain a relatively constant respondent burden across rounds by balancing all additions and subtractions from the questionnaire. The transition from Round 12 to Round 13 involves the removal of questions on promotions, personality and the new religion questions that were added in Round 12. The shorter health section will be fielded and questions about major events will only be asked of those returning to the survey after two rounds. Political participation questions will not be asked in Round 13 and the planned rotation will be followed for the self administered and fertility questions. The Round 13 questionnaire also includes additions to Round 12 content. There are additional questions in the employment section concerning workplace injury and specific questions for military veterans on job transitions. New questions were added to the health section, including questions for respondents turning 29. Also, fertility expectations questions will be included in Round 13. The Tell Us What You Think section will contain questions about the respondent’s perceptions of their position on the “ladder of life” and questions about the respondent’s favorite person. Altogether, we expect the design edits to the questionnaire to lead to a slight increase in respondent burden, primarily due to respondents returning to the survey after one or more rounds.
