This letter is to inform you that your child has been selected to participate in the American Time
Use Survey (ATUS)1. Conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, the ATUS is a brief, one-time-only
telephone interview that gathers information about how Americans spend their time. The survey
includes people aged 15 years and older, and the answers your child provides will represent
those of many teenagers. For this reason, your child’s participation in the survey is very
important.
Because your child’s participation is so important, we have enclosed a $40 ATM debit card for
your child as a way of showing our gratitude. The enclosed package provides you and your
child with information about the survey, the types of questions we will ask in the interview, and
information about using the debit card. All responses are guaranteed to be confidential and will
not be linked with your child’s name or any other identifying information.
Since we do not have a telephone number for your household, it is very important that your child
call us toll-free between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. (all time zones) at 1–800–232–1824 on
to complete this voluntary survey. If this is not a convenient day to complete the interview, your
child may call to reschedule the interview.

El propósito de esta carta es el de informarle que su hijo(a) ha sido seleccionado(a) para
participar en la Encuesta sobre el Uso del Tiempo en los Estados Unidos (ATUS por sus siglas
en inglés)1. La encuesta ATUS la lleva a cabo la Oficina del Censo de los EE.UU., y consiste en
una breve y única entrevista telefónica para obtener información sobre cómo pasan el tiempo las
personas en los Estados Unidos. La encuesta incluye a persona de 15 años de edad o más, y
las respuestas de su hijo(a) representarán a las de muchos adolescentes. Por esa razón, la
participación de su hijo(a) en la encuesta es muy importante.
Debido a que la participación de su hijo(a) es tan importante, junto con esta carta le enviamos
una tarjeta de débito para cajero automático por un valor de $40 para su hijo(a), como muestra
de nuestro agradecimiento. El material anexo les proporciona a usted y a su hijo(s) información
sobre la encuesta, los tipos de preguntas que le haremos en la entrevista, e información para
