Dear :
Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and the Kelsey Research Foundation are collaborating with U.T.-M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in a new research study entitled “Understanding Patient’s Knowledge and Use of Acetaminophen.” The purpose of this new study is to learn the views and beliefs that people have about acetaminophen or Tylenol and how they use it. We are particularly interested in talking with adolescents because Tylenol has reportedly been over used by some adolescents. When Tylenol is used correctly, it is very safe. However, large dosages in a short period of time are thought to be associated with acute liver failure. We want to improve the safe use of this medicine. We need to learn from adolescents what they know and how they use this drug. You have received this letter because we would like to invite your adolescent son/daughter to participate in this study.
This study is looking for adolescents (ages 13 to 20 years old) who have ever heard of over-the-counter acetaminophen and would be willing to complete an interview over the telephone. We will be enrolling a total of 20 adolescents in this study. The interview will last for about 30 minutes. During the interview, your son/daughter will be asked questions related to their own experiences or what they may have heard from their friends about what Tylenol is, how it is used and how much should be used. A research staff member will conduct the interview, which will be audio taped so that your son/daughter’s comments can be clearly understood. Your child’s name will be kept confidential, and the results from this study will not contain any information that can identify your child. At the end of the interview, your child will be mailed a $20 gift card to thank them for their time.
A research assistant from the study will be contacting you soon by phone to explain more about the study. If you DO NOT want to learn more about this study and DO NOT want to be contacted about your son/daughter’s participation in the interview, please fill out the enclosed self-addressed card and mail it back to us. After we receive this card, you will not be contacted again to participate in an individual interview for this study.
If you have any questions, please call Sofia de Achaval, at (713) 563-4479.
We have enclosed a copy of the consent form for your review. I hope that you will consider allowing your son/daughter to participate in this study. The results of this study will give the investigators a better understanding of adolescents’ knowledge and beliefs about Tylenol which may help to improve the safe use of this medication.
Thank you for your time,
Anthony Greisinger, Ph.D.
