Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program Evaluation

The Administration for Children and Families proposes a small change in question 14 of the “Youth Follow-up Study” for the outcome evaluation of the Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program.

Original version:

14. For about how many months did you meet with your mentor regularly after you

enrolled in the program?

1. Less than 6 months

2. 6 months or more

Proposed change to response options:

14. For about how many months did you meet with your mentor regularly after you

enrolled in the program?

1.  Less than 6 months
2.  6 months to 12 months
3.  More than 12 months

Justification:

Most research on mentoring of high risk youth has found that benefits begin after six months. However, a significant portion of the MCP caseload includes mentoring matches that have lasted much longer, and MCP grantees are encouraged to pass the 12 month mark. This change will provide more insight into the effects of longevity and duration.

Change of Burden:

None.
