Appreciative Inquiry Workshop Agenda


The workshop will involve several activities, including presentations, small group discussions, and large group discussions and debriefs. The workshop will include the following components:


  • Introduction – At the start of the workshop, the workshop moderator will give a short presentation on the philosophy and key principles of Appreciative Inquiry and the value of focusing on the positive. This section of the workshop will also serve to welcome participants, review the workshop’s agenda, clarify meeting roles, set ground rules, and handle other aspects of the meeting process.

  • Presentation of Findings – The moderator or other IMPAQ/Abt team member will present a summary of the findings from the evaluation, international contrast, and governance literature. The presentation will help “to inquire” and begin “to imagine” based on the perspectives of key informants and survey respondents the possibilities of the program.

  • Discussion of Findings – The moderator will lead a small group discussion on the findings and encourage further discussion of the program strengths and weaknesses identified, as well as the possibilities of the program.

  • Presentation of Alternative Governance Models and Elements – The moderator or other IMPAQ/Abt team member will present a high-level overview of the different draft alternative models of governance and elements.

  • Small Group Discussions – The moderator will divide individuals up into small groups. Each of the groups will be assigned a specific model (or self-select to the models they are most interested in) to critically review and consider. The groups will have 20-30 minutes to review the model and to consider its appropriateness for the EHC program. The group will be asked to summarize the model’s suitability for EHC, its strengths and weaknesses, and to rate its worth as a potential alternative. Each group will present back to the larger group their assessment of the model and their recommendation regarding its suitability for EHC. Each of the models and the respective small groups’ recommendations will be discussed in the larger group.

  • Individual Consideration and Development of Models [Imagining] – The next step of the AI process involves having each participant develop an individual vision for the EHC program’s future governance. Participants will be asked to reflect individually or in pairs on other potential models proposed for consideration. Participants will be asked to share their ideas with the group.

  • Rank and Select Governance Models – The moderator will direct an activity using a group ranking technique (e.g., anonymous voting, hand-raising, prioritizing) to rank or select the high priority alternative models of governance or its elements. This will be largely a consensus-building effort to determine what the group believes are the three most important, relevant, feasible models for the EHC program that should have roadmaps further outlined for the EHC program to consider.

  • Small Group Discussions of How to Innovate on Implementation Challenges and Options for Three Models – The moderator will divide individuals up into small groups. Each of the groups will be assigned one of the 3 final models (or self-select to the models they are most interested in) to innovate on the implementation approach and to consider the potential challenges to implementation. This will include considerations of who within AHRQ and the EHC program needs to commit to making the change, what challenges will be encountered, and how could those challenges be mitigated. As a final step, the groups will share their views on the implementation needs and challenges with the full group.

  • Summarize Workshop Outcomes and Next Steps – The moderator will summarize the workshop’s activities, the outcomes of each activity, the final three governance models, and the implementation needs and barriers to consider.
