Objective 1. Conduct a National Youth Gang Assessment.
The 2005 and 2006 National Youth Gang Survey (NYGS) Fact Sheets were published by
OJJDP in July 2008. They are also available on the NYGC and National Criminal Justice
Research Service Web sites.
Data collection efforts for the 2007 NYGS were completed at the end of August 2008.
Data analysis of the 2007 NYGS was completed in October 2008.
The 2007 NYGS Fact Sheet was submitted to OJJDP in November 2008.
Preparations for data collection regarding the 2008 NYGS began in November.
The NYGS Advisory Board met in San Antonio, Texas, on December 9, 2008, to discuss
potential questions for the 2008 NYGS. It was agreed that questions on immigration,
reentry of gang members, gang-related crime, and demographics would be asked in the
survey. New topics also were selected, and the 2008 NYGS will include questions about
implementation of gang laws and law enforcement monitoring of social networking Web
sites.
NYGC staff members receive frequent requests for data from the annual National Youth
Gang Survey. During this reporting period, requests from the following organizations
were received:




National Council on Crime and Delinquency
The FBI—Boston Division
Arizona State University

In addition, NYGC staff gave two presentations on findings from the NYGS. Two
presentations were given at the American Society of Criminology’s annual conference in
St. Louis, Missouri, in November 2008. The presentations were titled “Exploring Gang
Member Immigration in the United States” and “Are the Newer Gangs Different?”
Staff attended the National Institute of Justice Conference in Arlington, Virginia, in
July 2008 and attended panel discussions regarding gangs and juvenile delinquency.
