July Farm Prices Received Index Declined 4 Points
The preliminary All Farm Products Index of Prices Received by Farmers in July, at 130 percent, based on
1990-92=100, decreased 4 points (3.0 percent) from June. The Crop Index is down 12 points (7.5 percent) but the
Livestock Index was unchanged. Producers received higher prices for eggs, cattle, sweet corn, and snap beans and
lower prices for corn, wheat, soybeans, and tomatoes. In addition to prices, the overall index is also affected by the
seasonal change based on a 3-year average mix of commodities producers sell. Increased monthly marketings of
grapes, wheat, hay, and tomatoes offset decreased marketings of milk, cantaloups, potatoes, and strawberries.
The preliminary All Farm Products Index is down 29 points (18 percent) from July 2008. The Food Commodities
Index, at 129, decreased 3 points (2.3 percent) from last month and decreased 27 points (17 percent) from July 2008.
Prices Paid Index Down 1 Point
The July Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) is
176 percent of the 1990-92 average. The index is down 1 point (0.6 percent) from June and 15 points (7.9 percent)
below July 2008. Lower prices in July for nitrogen, feed grains, potash & phosphorus, and LP gas more than offset
higher prices for complete feeds, concentrates, other farm services, and feeder cattle.

Prices Received by Farmers
The July All Farm Products Index is 130 percent of its 1990-92 base, down 3.0 percent from the June index and
18 percent below the July 2008 index.
ALL CROPS: The July index is 149, down 7.5 percent from June and 19 percent below July 2008. Index decreases
for feed grains & hay, food grains, commercial vegetables, oil-bearing crops, and cotton more than offset the index
increase for potatoes & dry beans.
Food Grains: The July index, at 169, is 12 percent below the previous month and 30 percent below a year ago. The
July all wheat price, at $4.92 per bushel, is down 75 cents from June and $2.23 below July 2008.
Feed Grains & Hay: The July index is 149, down 13 percent from last month and 34 percent below a year ago. The
corn price, at $3.33 per bushel, is down 70 cents from last month and $1.92 below July 2008. The all hay price, at $116
per ton, is down $7.00 from June and $48.00 from last July. Sorghum grain, at $5.57 per cwt, is 73 cents below June
and $3.49 lower than July last year.
Cotton: The July index, at 76, is down 1.3 percent from June and 30 percent below last year. The July price, at
45.8 cents per pound, is down 0.6 cents from the previous month and 20.4 cents below last July.
Oil-Bearing Crops: The July index, at 184, is down 9.4 percent from June and 23 percent lower than July 2008. The
soybean price, at $10.30 per bushel, decreased $1.10 from June and is $3.00 below July 2008.
Fruits & Nuts: The July index, at 145, is unchanged from June but 4.6 percent lower than a year ago. Price decreases
for grapes, peaches, pears, and strawberries offset price increases for lemons and oranges.
Commercial Vegetables: The July index, at 148, is down 9.2 percent from last month but 2.8 percent above
July 2008. Price declines for tomatoes, lettuce, cantaloups, and broccoli more than offset price increases during July for
sweet corn, snap beans, cucumbers, and asparagus.
Potatoes & Dry Beans: The July index, at 166, is up 2.5 percent from last month but 21 percent below July 2008. The
all potato price, at $9.80 per cwt, is up 32 cents from June but $2.53 lower than last July. The all dry bean price, at
$29.80 per cwt, is down 30 cents from the previous month and $6.50 below July 2008.
LIVESTOCK & PRODUCTS: The July index, at 112, is unchanged from last month but down 19 percent from
July 2008. Compared with a year ago, prices for milk, cattle, hogs, eggs, turkeys, broilers, and calves are down.
Meat Animals: The July index, at 107, is up 0.9 percent from last month but 15 percent lower than last year. The July
hog price, at $43.40 per cwt, is up 10 cents from June but $10.90 lower than a year ago. The July beef cattle price of
$81.40 per cwt is up $1.00 from last month but $13.60 lower than July 2008.
Dairy Products: The July index, at 87, is unchanged from a month ago but 41 percent lower than July last year. The
July all milk price of $11.30 per cwt is unchanged from last month but down $8.00 from July 2008. The fluid grade
milk and manufacturing grade milk prices are unchanged from the previous month.
Poultry & Eggs: The July index, at 145, is down 1.4 percent from June and 5.8 percent below a year ago. The July
market egg price, at 51.9 cents per dozen, increased 13.3 cents from June but is 15.8 cents below July 2008. The July
broiler price, at 49.0 cents per pound, is down 2.0 cents from June and 1.0 cent below a year ago. The July turkey
price, at 52.2 cents per pound, is down 0.3 cents from the previous month and 8.7 cents from a year earlier.

Seasonal Adjustment Factors - All Eggs and All Milk
Base prices used in calculating parity prices are averages of prices received by farmers for several years; therefore, any
seasonal variation is largely averaged out. To facilitate comparisons with parity prices, monthly prices for all eggs and
all milk are adjusted for seasonal variation.
The seasonally adjusted price is calculated by dividing the monthly price by the adjustment factor. The factors are
based on prices for the years 1998-2008. Seasonal adjustment factors are published monthly as a footnote in the US
table containing the seasonal adjusted prices on page 11 of this publication.

Reliability of Prices Received Estimates
Definition: Prices received represent sales from producers to first buyers. They include all grades and qualities. The
average commodity price from the survey multiplied by the total quantity marketed theoretically should give the total
cash receipts for the commodity.
Survey Procedures: Primary sales data used to determine grain prices were obtained from probability samples of
about 2000 mills and elevators. These procedures ensure that virtually all grain moving into commercial channels has a
chance of being included in the survey. Generally, States surveyed account for 90 percent or more of total U.S.
production. Livestock prices are obtained from packers, stockyards, auctions, dealers, and market check data from
AMS-USDA, private marketing organizations, and state commodity groups and agencies. Inter-farm sales of grain and
livestock are not included since they represent very small percentages of the total marketings. Grain marketed for seed
is also excluded. Fruit and vegetable prices are obtained from sample surveys and market check data from AMSUSDA, private marketing organizations, state agencies, and universities.
Summary and Estimation Procedures: Survey quantities sold are expanded by strata to state levels and used to
weight average strata prices to a state average. State prices are then weighted to a U.S. price based on expanded
marketings. Recommendations are prepared by the State Field Offices and reviewed by the Agricultural Statistics
Board in Washington, D.C. State recommendations are reviewed for reasonableness with survey data, other States, and
recent historic estimates.
Revisions: For most items, the current month's preliminary price represents a 3-5 day period around the 15th of the
month. Previous month's prices represent actual dollars received for quantities sold during the entire month. Revisions
are published in monthly issues of Agricultural Prices.
Reliability: U.S. price estimates based on probability surveys generally have a sampling error of less than one percent
for the major commodities such as corn, wheat, soybeans, cotton, and rice. Current methods of summarization for nonprobability commodities are not designed directly to calculate sampling errors. However, analytical measures
approximate the U.S. relative sampling errors at around five percent. Any nonsampling errors are attributed to such
things as the inability to obtain correct information, differences in interpreting questions or definitions, mistakes in
coding or processing the data, etc. Efforts are made at each step in the survey process to minimize these nonsampling
errors.

Prices Paid by Farmers
The July Index of Prices Paid for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW) at 176
(1990-92=100), is down 0.6 percent from June 2009 and down 7.9 percent from July 2008.
PRODUCTION INDEX: The July index, at 177, decreased 1.1 percent from last month and 12 percent from last year.
Lower prices in July for nitrogen, feed grains, potash & phosphorus, and LP gas more than offset higher prices for
complete feeds, concentrates, other farm services, and feeder cattle.
Feed: The July index, at 198, increased 0.5 percent from June but decreased 8.8 percent from last July. Since June,
slightly higher prices for complete feeds and concentrates more than offset lower prices for feed grains, hay & forages,
and supplements.
Livestock & Poultry: The July index, at 113, increased 0.9 percent from last month but decreased 8.9 percent from
last year. Since June, higher cattle prices more than offset lower prices for milk cows and feeder pigs. The July feeder
cattle price, at $97.80 per cwt, is up $2.00 per cwt from the June price. July feeder pigs averaged $57.00 per cwt, down
$4.00 per cwt from June.
Fertilizer: The July index, at 239, is down 9.5 percent from June and 46 percent below July a year ago. Since June,
prices are lower for nitrogen, potash & phosphorus, and mixed fertilizer.
Chemicals: The July index, at 124, decreased 8.8 percent from June and decreased 11 percent from last July. Since
June, prices are lower for herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides/other.
Fuels: The July index, at 229, is down 3.4 percent from a month earlier and 47 percent below July 2008. Compared
with last month, prices are lower for LP gas and gasoline but higher for diesel fuel.
Machinery: The July index, at 220, is unchanged from June but increased 4.8 percent from last July.
CONSUMER PRICE INDEX: The June 2009 Consumer Price Index, as issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for
all urban consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.9 percent before seasonal adjustment to a level of 215.693 (1982-84=100).
This compares with the May index of 213.856. For the 12-month period ending in June, the overall index decreased
1.4 percent.

PPITW is adjusted based on productivity trend for the prior 15 years.

Reliability of Prices Paid Estimates
Definition: Prices paid by farmers represent the average costs of inputs purchased by farmers and ranchers to produce
agricultural commodities. Conceptually, the average price when multiplied by quantity purchased should equal total
producer expenditures for the item.
Survey Procedures: The prices paid data are obtained from establishments that sell goods and services to farmers and
ranchers. Annually, about 8,500 firms are randomly selected from lists by type of item sold with an average response
rate in the range of 75-80 percent. Firms are asked to report the price for the specified item "most commonly bought by
farmers" or that was the "volume seller". Approximately 135 items are surveyed each March to represent all production
input items purchased. The survey reference period for most items is the 5 business days centered around the 15th of
the month. Separate prices paid surveys are conducted for agricultural chemicals, fuels, feed, fertilizer, machinery, and
seed.
Summary and Estimation Procedures: The annual March Prices Paid Survey is summarized as a nonprobability
survey. Average prices reported are aggregated to the region and U.S. level using weights available from expenditure
data and other administrative sources. Price recommendations are prepared by the State Field Offices and Headquarters
for review by the Agricultural Statistics Board in Washington, D.C. Also, the change in price level for individual items
surveyed are combined to the regional and U.S. levels, and are published as prices paid indexes referenced to a specific
base period. Prices paid indexes for new autos and trucks, building materials, farm supplies, motor supplies, and
marketing containers are updated based on price changes measured in selected Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
indexes.
Revisions: Any revisions are published in the monthly and in annual issues of Agricultural Prices. The basis for
revision must be supported by additional data that directly affect the level of the estimate. More revisions are likely for
March when separate prices paid surveys are conducted, in lieu of BLS indexes, by the USDA to measure price change.
Reliability: Current methods of summarization for the March data are not designed directly to calculate sampling
errors. However, analytical measures approximate the U.S. relative sampling errors for major items around 10 percent.
Any nonsampling errors are attributed to such things as the inability to obtain correct information, differences in
interpreting questions or definitions, mistakes in coding or processing the data, etc. Efforts are made at each step in the
survey process to minimize these nonsampling errors.
Program Change: Effective January 1, 1995, the National Agricultural Statistics Service updated the weights and
changed the construction of its prices paid and received by farmers indexes. A Federal Register Notice dated October
28, 1994 discussed these program modifications.
A 1990-92 reference and base period replaced the 1977 reference and 1971-73 base weight period. Five-year moving
average weights replaced the current fixed 1971-73 base period weights. The 1910-14=100 price indexes, required by
statute for computing parity prices, were linked forward based on the changes in the new 1990-92=100 indexes. The
new indexes were constructed by multiplying the ratios of the current prices to the base period prices by the moving
average weights (adjusted for seasonal marketing patterns for the prices received indexes).
