The Centenarian Project Development Worksheets are currently in use without an OMB number. SSA discovered this inadvertent violation of the Paperwork Reduction Act in November 2009, and we compiled this clearance package to correct the lack of an OMB number.

SSA’s current Centenarian Project is limited to the San Francisco region, but we intend to expand the program nationwide beginning in April 2010. Our plan is to begin a rollout using the Centenarian Project Development Worksheets to conduct interviews with centenarians throughout the United States. The rollout will take place over the next year, which will allow SSA to determine whether these beneficiaries are still alive or deceased, or if they need a representative payee or a change in representative payees. In this way, we will prevent fraud through either identity misrepresentation or representative payee misuse of funds. Once the rollout is complete for those centenarians age 103 years or older, SSA may consider using the same process for those beneficiaries aged 100 to 102.

The Centenarian Project Development Worksheets are for the benefit of the interviewer to make sure that SSA obtains certain information from the interview. However, the interviewer is not limited to asking only questions derived from the checklists on the Worksheets. Rather, we use no script or standardized questions for the interviews with the centenarians, as there are too many variables from one recipient to the next.
