DEPENDENT’S APPLICATION FOR VA EDUCATION BENEFITS

Public Law 111-32 amended the Post-9/11 GI Bill to add the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship (Fry Scholarship), an educational assistance scholarship available to children of active duty members of the Armed Forces who die in the line of duty after September 10, 2001. As such, VA is amending VA Form 22-5490 to include a section for Fry Scholarship applicants. This form was originally created for recipients of chapter 35; however, all individuals eligible under the Fry Scholarship provisions are also eligible under chapter 35. The new section of this form only requires the applicant to indicate whether the request for benefits is being made under chapter 35 or under the Fry Scholarship program. 

There are no substantive changes being made and the annual respondent burden for this information collection remains the same.
