(ENGLISH AND SPANISH)

Cognitive Interview with Probes

March 12, 2007

Cognitive Version 2.1

Women can experience unwanted sex in different ways. Women do not always report unwanted sex to the police. They don’t always discuss it with friends or family members. It’s important to know that the person who has unwanted sex with a woman may not be a stranger. The person can be an acquaintance, a friend, a romantic partner, a family member, a co-worker, a supervisor, a boss or someone else. The unwanted sex can happen anywhere, such as a home, a car, at a job, or in another public place. A woman who experiences unwanted sex could be awake or asleep, unconscious, drunk or high. She could be unable to give consent for some other reason when it happens. Please keep these things in mind as we go through the survey.

Probe: Please tell me in your own words what this introduction told you.

Because of the kind of unwanted sexual experiences that we are going to talk about, the words may seem graphic to you. I have to ask about these experiences this way so that you are clear about what I mean. We will compare your responses with those of the other women we interview. I will explain all the terms I use. I can always repeat the definitions if you need to be reminded. Remember, your answers will be confidential.

Probe: We talked about unwanted sexual experiences, what does this phrase mean to you?

Section 1: Gateway Questions – Unwanted Sexual Situations

First, I want to ask you some questions about unwanted sexual situations in your lifetime. These situations do not involve touching, sexual intercourse, or attempted sexual intercourse. They happened after you said or showed you didn’t want them to. They happened without your consent.

[Internal notes on determining what detail question to ask. These will be removed prior to administration of the survey.]

We will first determine how many incidents of Unwanted Sexual Situations, Unwanted Touching, Unwanted (vaginal, anal, or oral) Sex, and Attempted Unwanted (vaginal, anal, or oral) Sex a respondent reported. Sections 4 & 5 are the detail questions section for completed and attempted sexual assault: Section 4 asks about first ever and Section 5 asks about most recent. The interviewer will ask questions from sections 4 & 5 (as appropriate, based on the responses to the screening questions from section 3). We are going to ask the subset of detail questions about the first and most recent incidents (presuming there were multiple events reported) of the remaining less “severe” experiences reported (e.g., unwanted touching and non-contact sexual situations). For Unwanted Sex and Attempted Unwanted Sex we also need to have some coding that will take into account if the respondent reports experiencing only 1 type of sex (e.g., only vaginal, anal, or oral), then the follow-up detail questions should refer to that specific type of sex. Similarly, if more than 1 type is reported, then the follow-up questions should refer to the unwanted incident as ‘sex.’ For example:

CONDITIONAL: If more than 1 type of unwanted sex reported in Section 3,

DUMMY = ‘sex’; else if only 1 type of unwanted sex reported:

DUMMY: vaginal sex

oral sex

anal sex

If DUMMY = ‘sex’ then the first question (Q4.1) will determine which type(s) of SV occurred during the incident.

Section 4: Severe Detail Questions - FIRST EXPERIENCE

Now, I want to ask some more detailed questions about your first experience of unwanted DUMMY. Some people may find these questions upsetting. It is important that I ask them this way so that you are clear about what I mean. The information you are providing is confidential.

CONDITIONAL 4.1: If DUMMY = ‘sex’ or ‘attempted sex’ and more than 1 type of DUMMY is reported continue, else skip to Q4.2
