Summary
Broiler-Type Chicks Hatched Down 1 Percent from Previous Year
Broiler-type chicks hatched during 2008 totaled 9.46 billion, down 1 percent from 2007.
Leading U.S. breeders had intended placements of 85.8 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future
domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2008, down 2 percent from 2007.
19-State Broiler Placements Down 2 Percent
Placements of broiler chicks on feed for meat production in the 19-State weekly program totaled
8.96 billion during the 52 week period ending December 27, 2008 down 2 percent from the 52 week
period ending December 29, 2007.
Egg-Type Chicks Hatched Up 5 Percent
Egg-type chicks hatched during 2008 totaled 467 million, up 5 percent from 2007.
Leading U.S. breeders had intended placements of 2.96 million egg-type pullet chicks for future
domestic hatchery supply flocks during 2008, down 1 percent from 2007.
Turkey Net Poults Placed Down 4 Percent
Turkey poults hatched during 2008 were down 2 percent from 2007, with 306 million hatched. Net
poult placements totaled 296 million, down 4 percent from 2007.
Hatchery Capacity
The capacity of chicken hatcheries on January 1, 2009 was 904 million eggs, up slightly from
January 1, 2008.
The capacity of turkey hatcheries was 39.5 million eggs on January 1, 2009, down 1 percent from
January 1, 2008.

Reliability of Hatchery Production Estimates
Survey Procedures: Data for hatchery estimates are collected from all known chicken and turkey
hatcheries. Approximately 300 chicken hatcheries are contacted for information on a weekly, monthly,
and/or annual basis. Also, approximately 40 turkey hatcheries are contacted each month. Individual
NASS field offices maintain a list of all known hatcheries and use known sources to update their lists.
All known hatcheries are mailed a questionnaire as close to the first of the month as possible and given
adequate time to respond via mail, fax, or electronic data reporting (EDR). Those that do not respond
are contacted by phone. Care is exercised to ensure that all hatcheries are accounted for in the
estimates.
Estimating Procedures: Sound statistical methodology is employed to derive the estimates from
reported data. All data are analyzed for unusual values. Data from each operation are compared to their
own past operating profile and to trends from similar operations. Data for missing operations are
estimated based on similar operations or historical data. NASS field offices prepare these estimates by
using a combination of survey indications and historic trends. Individual State estimates are reviewed
by the Agricultural Statistics Board for reasonableness. Individual hatchery data are summed to State,
regional, and U.S. totals.
For chicken hatcheries, chicks hatched consist of all chicks of domesticated breeds including males
and chicks intended for hatchery supply flocks and research purposes. Eggs set are eggs in incubators
for the purpose of hatching. The relationship of egg-type chicks hatched to chicken inventory and
poultry marketings are carefully monitored. Broiler chicks placed are specifically placed on feed for
meat production. Intended placement data reported by leading breeders include pullet chicks expected
from eggs sold the preceding month. The breeders in this report account for a large percentage of
replacement pullets for hatchery supply flocks. Production of replacement pullets by these breeders
indicates the number of pullets available to hatchery supply layer flocks several months before the
pullets will actually move into the laying flocks. AHatchery Supply Flocks@ include all generations of
layers which could lay eggs to supply a hatchery. This includes the generations of parents,
grandparents, great-grandparents, pedigree, etc. Also included are research flocks, vaccine flocks, and
specific pathogen-free flocks. The broiler cumulative potential placements are a moving total of the
intended placements 7-15 months earlier. The egg-type cumulative potential placements of 7-18
months earlier represent the first laying cycle. Molting and additional laying cycles will increase the
cumulative potential placements of egg-type hatching flocks.
For turkey hatcheries, only regional and U.S. level estimates are published due to the limited number
of hatcheries involved. Net poults placed refer to placement of poults from hatcheries located in that
region, not the actual location of the birds after placement. Net poults placed includes imported poults
and excludes exported poults.
Revision Policy: Revisions are generally the result of late or corrected data. Revisions made to any
weekly or monthly data during the year are published in this report.
Reliability: Hatchery estimates are based on a census of all known operating hatcheries and therefore,
have no sampling error. However, estimates are subject to errors such as omission, duplication, and
mistakes in reporting, recording, and processing the data. While these errors cannot be measured
directly, they are minimized through strict quality controls in the data collection process and a careful
review of all reported data for consistency and reasonableness.
