Short Statement: Because of the economic downturn, a number of FDIC-supervised institutions have closed or merged since 2007, resulting in a decrease of 549 in the overall number of respondents, from 5073 in 2007 to 4781 in 2010. However, the number of banks whose asset size has increased since 2007 to meet the large bank threshold has risen by 34. Therefore, despite the overall decrease in total number of respondents, the increase in burden of 19,291 hours is the result of an increase by 34 in the number of large financial institutions that are subject to reporting and recordkeeping requirements not applicable to smaller institutions.
