A Study of Fishing
In North Carolina

This study is being conducted with the assistance of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration in accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and
Management Act of 2006. Your participation is voluntary. All responses will be kept
confidential under the Privacy Act of 1974.
The information you provide will be combined with information provided by other
participants to produce statistical summaries and reports.

saltwater fishing in the U.S. or a U.S. territory?

Recreational saltwater fishing refers to fishing primarily with hook and line for pleasure, amusement, relaxation, or home
consumption in oceans, bays, inlets, canals, intra-coastal waterways, and brackish portions affected by the tides. Inland
saltwater bodies includes sounds, passes, inlets, bays, estuaries, brackish portions of rivers, and other areas of salt or
brackish water like bayous and canals.

How did you get my address?
Your address was randomly selected from among all of North Carolina’s
addresses. It was selected using scientific sampling methods to represent other
households in your part of the state.

Nobody in my household fishes. Should I respond to the survey?
Yes. It is important that we gather information about households that do not fish
as well as those who do. Once we receive your completed questionnaire, you
will not be sent any additional mailings such as replacement questionnaires.

Why can’t you interview another household instead of mine?
In order to make sure final results of the study are accurate, receiving information
about your household is important to us. Households selected for this study
were chosen using scientific sampling methods and your responses cannot be
replaced by others.

How will the information I provide be used?
Information from this study will be used to improve the monitoring of North
Carolina’s fishing activity. All information will be kept confidential; It will be
combined with information from other households to produce statistical
summaries and reports.

the time for reviewing instructions, and completing and reviewing the collection of
