Global Migration and Quarantine



  1. Do health departments in your state routinely investigate the travel histories of reportable infectious disease cases and notify the CDC Quarantine Station with jurisdiction over your state in order to facilitate contact tracing?

  2. With which community sectors (e.g., businesses, child care centers, school districts, event planners, faith-based communities etc.) do you have existing working relationships?

  3. What kind(s) of public health activities (including communication and education) are you currently conducting among immigrant, refugee or migrant populations?

  4. Does your agency have reciprocal mandates (tied to funding) with other agencies in your community to work together around emergency preparedness and response, especially those that would be involved in recommending and implementing National Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs)?

  5. How many notifiable disease specific reporting forms (e.g., TB, HIV/AIDS) does your agency have?

  6. Please identify in which form(s) you collect information on:

    1. Country of birth

    2. Year of arrival to the US (for the foreign-born)

    3. Preferred language

Do you include those questions in outbreak investigations?

  1. What are the most important infectious disease issues faced by migrants, refugees and other mobile populations in your jurisdiction? What are your needs for addressing them?


  1. Do you have data on vaccine coverage among immigrant, refugee or migrant populations? 

  2. What resources are available in your state to manage infectious disease issues related to animal exposures or an outbreak of zoonotic disease (e.g. State Veterinarian, necropsy facilities, diagnostic laboratory)?

  3. What legal or regulatory authorities does your agency have to enact and enforce NPIs (such as cancellation of mass gatherings, school dismissals, etc.)?

  4. During an outbreak: If CDC guidelines are available, does your state/local health department following the CDC recommended guidelines or do you develop your own guidelines? 

  5. If not following CDC guidelines, why not (limited staffing, reached capacity for medical evaluation, etc.) and how do the state/local guidelines differ?

  6. Are you currently faced with health issues spread by international travel? If yes, please describe.

  7. What capacity do you currently have to respond to disease outbreaks spread by international travel?

  8. Do you provide a link to the CDC Travelers’ Health website on your organization’s website?

  9. Are there active anti-vaccination groups in the area and what is the current uptake of routine childhood vaccinations?

  10. What kinds of mosquito control activities (e.g. spraying, larvacide, etc.) are you currently conducting?

  11. What are the demographics of the foreign born population in your state  (immigrant, refugee and undocumented populations)
