Sources of Survey Questions

Sources of Survey Questions

Previous Data Collection Instruments Used

While each section of the proposed questionnaire contains questions developed by the research team, much of the survey uses questions or topics available in previously developed data collection instruments. New questions were developed that specifically asked about the presence of specific job hazards that are addressed in the Homecare Worker Handbook. The intervention group will also be asked specific questions about the intervention training and handbook during the post survey—control participants will not be asked these questions. The list below explains the major instrument from which survey questions were drawn. The tables provide detailed question by question sources of questions for both the pre and post surveys for the home care workers and clients.

Home Care Worker Survey

  1. The home care worker survey was drawn largely from the National Home Health Aides Survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, CDC. The National Home Health Aide Survey (NHHAS), the first national probability survey of home health aides, was designed to provide national estimates of home health aides employed by agencies that provide home health and/or hospice care. NHHAS was sponsored by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE). (OMB No. 0920–0298)

  2. Job demands and job control measures were derived from the Quality of Working Life Survey is a module of the General Social Survey. This module was developed by NIOSH and administered as part of the GSS during its 2002, 2006 and 2010 cycles. .

  3. Social Support Questions and self efficacy measured were derived from scales that were developed specifically for caregivers by Heaney (1991 and 2010).

  4. Needlestick injury questions were drawn from a recent survey (Gershon 2008) developed by NIOSH funded researchers to measure the rates of needlestick injuries among home health care workers.

  5. The question on reading and speaking fluency in English was taken from the Department of Labor National Agricultural Workers Survey (OMB No. 1205–0453)

Client survey

  1. The Assistant Secretary for Program and Evaluation, DHHS funded a major study to evaluate the effectiveness of a new model of provision of home care services called “Cash and Counseling”. To evaluate this program Mathematica Survey group conducted a major evaluation. Several questions related to client use of home care services were drawn from their survey. (Brown 2007)

  2. Questions related to client satisfaction and client attitudes towards their home care workers were drawn from well validated measures of client satisfaction: The home care satisfaction measure (Geron 2000) and the related Service Adequacy Satisfaction Instrument (Applebaum 2007)

  3. Measures of client self-efficacy were derived to be similar to the HCW self efficacy measures
