To Whom It May Concern,

In 2007 the Mayor’s Task Force for Convenience Store Safety was established and chaired by Zafar Tahir, President of South Texas Area Dealer’s Association and Assistant Chief John Trevino of the Houston Police Department. The task force recommended an ordinance that would mandate convenience stores follow recommended safety measures for the health and safety of the convenience store workers.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) studies worker health and safety, and convenience store workers have very high rates of work-related deaths. The Chinese Community would like to see all of its members who work at convenience stores experience a safe and healthy work environment.

As the Executive Director of the Chinese Community Center, I strongly encourage the participation of each Chinese-American convenience store worker and owner in the study being conducted by NIOSH. Participating in this study involves the convenience store manager answering approximately 20 minutes worth of questions. Interviewers who speak Chinese will call to make arrangements to visit a store to administer the survey at the manager’s or owner’s convenience. Your responses to the questions will be kept confidential and not shared with anyone.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a safety ordinance on workplace violence. I have met with leaders of this study and wholly support this project. I encourage you to participate in the study as it will help make our community safer.

Sincerely,

Chi-Mei Lin

Executive Director
